Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Was unbelievably fortunate to be at the top of a hill. I'll call it a success that I did not have to walk back to my truck, unlike the last time that this happened.

I think the only thing I've had that broke during a ride was a spoke. Once the freewheel or whatever you call it gave out. Not sure if that counts as breaking or wearing out.

The question now is whether to replace the derailleur or switch to singlespeed for the winter.

I preemptively replace everything way before it wears out.

After breaking a rear derailleur cable on a ride, 8 miles from home and nowhere near a telephone, I did grow more enthusiastic with my bike maintenance.

Operator error. Was climbing and got too close to a rock. Rock pushed the cage in to the spokes and that was that.

Was in a pretty low gear so the torque really borked the RD good. The derailleur body is actually broken.
Impressive. How's the wheel?

It's plastic, but it's a real, sewn Goodyear welt.
