Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You're safe!

I don't like leaving somebody feeling 'weak'... BUT, that has never, not once, stopped me from going full speed. In fact, I see other riders as a motivator, either to catch the rider up the road, or when I know somebody's behind me, I'll push hard to keep them there. So if I hurt your feelings, sorrynotsorry.

Nope, I was racing myself (Strava PR) up that hill and the guy shouted out as I blew his doors off. He had nothing to do with my pace. I did like his reaction.

I'm heading to Kona tomorrow bringing my road bike. I expect to be passed multiple times by tri bikes, where they outnumber road bikes 3:1.

If he could shout, he wasn't riding very hard at all.

He couldn't hold his line and was slowing, he had lungs, but I'm guessing he didn't have legs.

... Or he wasn't honestly putting effort into the climb and my ego-boost is completely misplaced, 'cause I'm actually slow and pathetic.

I thought I was in relatively good shape. Until I realized that a 14.5mph average over 40 miles is dog****... and that I get passed on the mup by old dudes in their 40's and 50's that are just crushing it. I always tell myself that they're just going 10-15-18 miles tops so that's why they're so fast.. right? right guys?

Pretty pathetic indeed. The lengths humans will go to stroke their fragile egos is mind blowing.

You should read all the Hypno Toad's post, fragile ego is not an issue here. However, I'm overjoyed to others on BFers suffer from the same lack-of-reading skills I suffer from:

If you can ride hard, your cardiovascular system is functioning well enough to drive air really hard, which is to say you can shout just fine.

That is not quite correct. Don't wanna get passed? Stay home. That is the more correct analysis. No matter how strong you are, someone else is stronger.

I could/can always shout at my limit. My lungs can handle more air than my heart can pump.

Got to go somewhere. I mean this is not the racing forum - right?
He might have passed a real racer doing Z1 that had to ride alone because everyone else rides too fast.

To prove that Hypno Toad is a hypocrite:

Only Peter Sagan is faster than me, and not by much.

(ok, that's a lie to protect my fragile ego)

This entire episode could have been overcome if we abandoned capitalism.

"On your left comrade" sounds much more nicer and has a double entendre to it as well

Interesting. I must be the odd man out, not being able to shout when I'm redlining.

Great strategy. That way Hypno Toad can brag unambiguously that he didn't get passed by one single rider. We'll just say that he dominated.

What about Lisa? Did she pass the guy, too? Did he also shout at her? At the top of the hill, when you waited for Lisa, who arrived first... Lisa, or the guy?

Many people are not balanced with their systems. Some have big legs with lots of power they cannot feed, some easier to feed legs with big hearts just no power (think *some* swimmers on bikes) - I'll spare you the combinations.

As long as you don't turn right at the next opportunity (or find a reason to wait for Lisa) - sounds legit.
