Early '70s Grand Prix with a 25" frame (and a "D.O.A." Wright's leather saddle).

Today I purchased a Raleigh frame with fork, headset, bottom bracket and seat post w/bolt. The frame has been repainted over the original red. The serial number is 335582 and is located on the left rear drop-out. The forks ends and drop-outs are Zeus Competition. The bottom bracket shell is stamped "TT". The main tubes are 531 butted - I'm not sure about the fork and stay tubing. The seat post is 27mm in diameter. I put a pair of 27" x 1 1/4" wheels on it, and they have about 2cm of clearance to the fork crown and brake bridge. There are of course no decals other than the Reynolds decal at the base of the seat tube.

Would anyone know which model this is?

Zeus dropouts and 531 frame tubing suggests "Super Course."

It could have the wrong reynolds sticker and be a competition. Super Courses had non hanger dropouts until they switched to Suntour Drops IIRC.

Maybe an earlier Gran Sport?
1973 Gran Sport is my final guess.

I agree - I think the Gran Sport had Zeus drops for one year, around '73. Nice frame, no matter what. I don't think Super Courses did.

I found a older Columbia 3 speed abandoned in the entrance to some woods near my house. I don't know if it's a Sports or a Tourist, but it does have the Sturmey-Archer 3 Speed hub. It was repainted in what looks like blue house paint and ditched. I first spotted it and waited a few hours and came back for it, reasoning that it had locked up brakes and completely flat tires and that it must have been abandoned. I'll post pictures later tonight.

I just pulled the fork from the head tube. It looks like it is missing 2 or 3 bearings at the top race in addition to hardly any grease. I expect to see similar conditions in the bottom bracket.

Whoever repainted it did the steerer tube as well. There may be a bit of teal in some of the light spots, but it could also be thin blue spray over white. This weekend I will sand the steerer down and see what I can find under the top coat.

You've convinced me that it is likely a Gran Sport from 73 - 75. I wish I knew which components were original, but the first and second owners sold them off a while ago.

a 73 would have GB Bars and Stem, Carlton branded Weinmann levers and Weinmann 750's. Simplex Prestige rear, Rod Actuated Simplex front along with Delrin shifters. Brooks B15 and aluminum post. Stronglight 93. Weinmann straight side 27's and Normandy hubs.

could be a gran sport, i know they had zeus drop outs in the early 70's 72 maybe? that was all 531 too.. good find!

Sorted out all the bearings, replaced the cables, tape, tuned, etc. and sent it on it's way. Those old Treks sure clean up nice.

Here's my Super Le Tour--the derailers were junk, so I've set up as a budget single speed. Overhauled the entire bike and reused all the original parts. Total cost = $0, minus the time spent, that is. This bike definitely has some "beausage." Frame's big for me but I love the way it rides! The gear ratio is actually perfect too-just low enough to climb most hills, but high enough for speed on flat ground. It's gonna be my city beater.

This thing is ROUGH though. Going to need serious attention.

The worst part about it is that it's missing it's matching non-drive side stronglight crank arm which is too bad. Sooo, searching one out or going with another option for a crankset. Let me know if you have something, would be appreciated. Depending on how this thing starts to shake out, it may be the gal's rider.

This pair of '87 Schwinn World Sports went unsold on eBay twice for $100, I snagged them for much less the third time around. So much so, I thought the seller was going to disappear or try and back out somehow. I picked them up this morning. They in in great shape, storage grimy and dry rotted tires but an easy clean up. These are the ebay pics.

Just grabbed this '77 Sprite 10 at a rummage sale this morning. Absolutely beautiful original condition (except for the horrible rear derailleur and torn up seat). Included was the original owner's manual, Raleigh branded bell, front and rear generator light kit, and even an original, Raleigh branded tire and tube! I was glad to shell out $25 for this beaut. The fork might be slightly tweaked, but it looks a little "off" in catalog pictures too...

This one was saved from the scrapper. Local scrap yard is paying 4 cents a pound for metal right now, so this frameset would only bring about 25 cents. So the local DKO flipper let me have it out of his large scrap pile. Headset, crankset, and seat post will all be reused. Stem and bars will go to the co-op.

1992 Schwinn Crosscut. I've had a few Crisscrosses, this is my first Crosscut. Definitely nicer model, lugged steel frame, db cromoly, made in Taiwan.

I'll do a drop bar conversion on it, just for the heck of it. 16 inch frame ~ 41 cm.

Some surface rust on the freewheel cogs that looks removable, rust to brake cable hangers, chain rusted, saddle trashed, lots of grime.

Owner figured it was wrecked from being out in the yard all winter and put it on Craigslist for $75.

I haven't ventured into the crank yet, but it looks like one of the newer models with standard threading for the crank puller so I won't have to get another tool (hopefully).

Yes, the indents on the spider suggest a post-1982 crank, which should use a standard 22mm puller. It's quick and easy to check -- if it's an old-style 23.35mm arm, the 22mm puller will just drop in without engaging any threads.

I was figuring that, based on one of your old posts. Not looking to replace the crank, since it's in great shape, but any idea if the spindle is ISO or JIS with these later models?
