Doing the Brevets (200,300,400,600k every other saturday) for a possible Paris Brest in August. Started today with the 300k because I wasn't able to do the 200 for family reasons and will have to that next weekend. Great ride today, nice weather and good people to ride with. Pretty shot right now but we did it in elleven and a half hours so I,m pleased with the time.

I rode 6 mi. today. This was the fourth time out on my new bike. I am still learning (re-learning) how to ride and am getting used to clipless pedals.

I went to Valley Forge National Park. They have 18 mi. of bicycle trails there. Here is a link to a map of the trails: https://tinyurl.com/4yltl59 .

I had planned on doing more, but it turns out the terrain there is quite hilly. I rode up Mount Joy (it seemed like an ironic name at the time) twice, going out and coming back. It was a gorgeous spring morning, with temps in the high 50's/low 60's, bright and sunny with a few puffy clouds and almost no wind. The bicycle trails were packed with joggers and walkers. I noticed that most "hard-core" bikers chose to ride on the very nice park roads, rather than the bike trails. There wasn't much car traffic on the roads at that hour (9 a.m.).

NealH and I met jppe at in Walhalla, SC for Issaqueena's Last Ride, Joe rode the full century while Neal and I headed out on the century and took the metric route back at the split after the high point. That added up to 82 miles. We had a total of 6150' of climbing in 5:18 ride time for a 15.4mph average. It was a perfect day for a ride on a beautiful course. I wore out towards the end though and had to limp on in to the finish.

Today’s events: Decided to do a social ride with the Florida Free Wheelers today. Got up early so I could get a few miles in before I met them at 8:00 AM. There was a little chill in the air so I rode to Einstine Bagels to get some breakfast instead. At about 7 AM I headed for the trail head and about 20 riders showed up for the ride. The ride leader discussed the rules and we headed out. One group stopped at Panera and about 8 of us went on, since I had already had my bagel I stayed with group to the end of the trail. The ride with them was about 30 miles at a leisure pace so when we got back I headed out to do another 24 miles then headed for home. On my way home I stopped at the local bike store on the trail and test rode a Raleigh 29er. Man that thing is a beast.

Statistics for: 05/07/2011
Group/Solo ride today.
Miles today: 54+
Mileage this month May: 233+
Mileage this year: 3203+
Percent of 2011 goal achieved: 45+%
Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: -2 days
Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +517 miles
Average miles per ride this year: 39+ (best ever)
Average miles per ride this month: 46+
Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000: 3796, and an 8,000 mile year (best ever) is not out of reach.

Tomorrow I plan to ride with my daughter (perhaps).

76 miles in a new pair of PI PRO Leader Bibs. I am not too impressed to be honest. At first they were great, new 4D pad seems real nice , it is pre-formed to fit all the curves one has, the material is real nice , feels nice but...I started to get chaffing and not sure I like that. It wasn't too bad but still for the cash I would think I would not get that. Oh well such is life. Maybe it was just new and will be better next ride, hope so anyway. Maybe some ASSOS in places I do not use now will help.

Oh....at a traffic light when I first started out I was first in line, well only one in line then a car came up behind me.We were the only ones there no cars in either direction. I was sitting there thinking should I run this light and then I heard"Do you want to race" on a loud speaker! It was a unmarked State Trooper! I turned around and waved no and just laughed. That just cracked me up. Light turned green and off we went with me still laughing.

Rode the Wine Country Century (100K) on the tandem today. Perfect weather, fabulous scenery and great rest stops - no wonder this thing sells out in a few days. We averaged just over 16 mph on a course with only one real, albeit short, climb, but the longish rollers do hurt our average on the tandem. The organizers had warned about road conditions via e-mail, but the conditions didn't detract from the ride.

32 miles today with my oldest son. He's a real trooper. He stuck with me on a lot of hills today, with no complaining.

69 mile organized ride in a small town east of here. Mildly rolling hills and perfect weather. Pretty good speed by my standards.

I really should be doing some hillwork in preparation for Mountains of Misery at the end of the month, but instead rode the Six Pillars Century ride in Cambridge, MD.

197 total feet of climbing!

Without riding in any pacelines, and with a good bit of wind, I still managed a time of 5:40. That's pretty good for me. I think I spent all but about 5 miles of it in the drops though, so my neck is a little sore this morning.

I did about 15 to 20 miles on each one of my 1979 Raleigh Competition GSs. Just rode around my area. I had forgot how my 70s bikes ride. They ride good. The one in the foreground is a one-owner, full campy job, whereas the one in the background is the one my son gave me about 35 years ago. I know, they are tall bikes, but they fit my 6'3" frame perfectly. Old school sweetness..

Gorgeous day to ride. Stayed with the front group for 20 miles. Regrouped with 3 others for 20 miles and then did the last 60 miles solo. Ride time was a smidge over 6 hrs with 7400 ft of climbing. I had forgotten there was a good bit of climbing after the tough climb at the half way point. After screaming down a hill at literally 50 mph we were faced with a 1/2 mile wall at 13-14% at the 85 mile mark. I felt that one and limped in. Good saddle time for Colorado.

The sun is out !! Started off fixing a flat before I even got out the door, better now than later and set off on my usual 16 mile loop. I felt so good that I went on the longer loop in the other direction. 44 miles, 2257 ft of climbing.. My avg cadence is up to 87. My garmin says 44 miles, the Sigma 46.5 miles. Better check my setup numbers on both.

I ran into a gusty headwind on my way back so I took my time coming back on the second loop. 3 hrs 22 minutes instead of what should have been 3 hours. I changed my route a bit on the way back because there were huge clouds of midges, not a lot of fun when climbing hills when you're spitting them out and trying to breathe at the same time. Ptui!!

Must remember to eat... must remember to eat ... must remember to eat...

No rain today! But the club ride started cloudy/foggy, almost to the point of mist. The roads were dry, though. There were hills - started in flat to rolling farmland and went to hills around Cordry-Sweetwater Lakes. Ended up doing 42 of the 49 mile Long ride - about half of the very hilly extra loop for that route was enough for me - I bypassed the remaining climbs. The ride back to the starting point near Franklin was rolling to flat country roads with a little bit of a tailwind.
Really wish there were some serious hills in my neck of the woods that I could ride regularly to improve my skills, by which I mean legs and lungs.

. . . and again today for two in a row! Made 30 miles this morning; tackling a mild headwind of 7 to 8 mph going out and up and down hills for and avg. spd. of 12. Turned around at the 15-mile mark, took a short break, strectched for about 10 minutes then headed back in to finish with a16.3mph avg. on the return trip. total time 2:10:12 great workout! Puts me at 295 for the year and close to 1/5 of the way to my goal of 1500.

I put the new handlebars on the Specialized yesterday. Took it out today. MUCH nicer ride. The Specialized handlebars that came on the bike are NOT comfortable at all. They have a flat top for resting your hands but it wasn't comfortable for me, thus the new round bars (Easton EA50).
Did my usual 30 miles today, including a lap around Stone Mountain.
Still trying to get the hang of shifting (Sram Apex) while doing standing hill climbs. Can I put Shimano 105 shifters on here without replacing the derailleurs? Please, please, please, please, please.

Why is it taking so long to get comfortable on this bike. I've had this thing 4+ months. I wish the shop had a 6 month return policy.
