Too early... (for the northern hemisphere, at least). I just proved it yesterday.

Doing a Flying 200M (or even a Flying 100) and timing it this time of year will simply hurt my feelings. Even if I'm following a great program to the letter, the time will still suck
I may do the efforts, but I won't time them.

Eh, it was kinda required. I think I wasn't the only one with hurt feelings yesterday.

mist likely I'll be there attempting to erase the pain and disappointment that this Sunday's TTs will cause

Sweet. To Quinn and anyone else who'll be there, I'll be looking for TS partners.
Edit: I can do a low-19 sec opener (when I'm fit)

Yes, did in Japan year and a half ago. Well, barely low to be fair– 19.4xx. I should say mid!

My best is 35.4 at 500. Looking at my splits it's usually slower every split after 250, where as someone with long speed like Vugrincic is still accelerating up to 500. More and more I'm starting to think that I've been thinking wrong about how to do a kilo. I think that I've been "floating" too soft, and that what I perceived as holding pace was actually losing speed. Time to do some (painful) experimentation this year.

I agree about the floating.
For most people it's like putting on the brakes

I plan to change my ways this year! Or at least learn to float "better". Maybe I should start training with a computer.

I would focus more on Pacing and less on Floating... Pacing is something you can do quite well with a $20 stopwatch taped to your Aero Extension... I like the GymBoss

Thanks for the help, Quinn. I actually have a computer for the bike. Just hate how it looks on there- like a road bike. Gross.

Perceived effort when "floating" is really hard.
When Lee was having me do longer efforts, I had to think of "slowly increasing speed" to actually "float". Sometimes I try and make a beat to track in my head that coincides with my RPM (and usually gasping for air) to try and gauge by feel, to see if I'm losing rpm/speed. Obviously this isn't super accurate.. haha.
Another solution is to just not go farther than 200m <- best solution, obviously

But I think the point for me is I've been far too lazy with my "float"!
This is going to hurt...

Mentally you are always going to pace yourself somewhat based on the length of the effort- it's subconscious. That's why my best standing 500m is 1" faster than my 500m split on my best kilo.. You know what's coming and you pace accordingly..
now Float- to me that is literally stopping putting pressure on the pedals for a period. It's usually through a turn and the goal os to keep the feet moving so you don't slow down, but you are letting off the power and getting some recovery
IMHO- if you are a natural "starter" and you are essentially slowing down after the first 250m- I'd highly advise against floating.. It's better to work on an output that you maintain 45-50" and then work on increasing that..

By the way, the 19.4xx is from a stand-alone 250 effort. My other best 250 is from a 500, and it was 19.551. I think I can still go quicker for just a 250.

Oops, just realized this is a major thread hijack. This is supposed to be on 200's. Carleton can you move this to a new thread called something like "kilo's for dummies"?
