Here's my mountain commuter.
I bought it for $15 at the Grand Opening of a Salvation Army store.
I switched out the tires, tubes, seat, added bar ends and rack and have ridden it probably a couple hundred miles.
If anybody can tell me some info about it, I'd appreciate it.
Obviously a Giant Iguana, but correct year, etc. I'd like to know.
From bikepedia I think it's from the early/mid 90s, but couldn't find an exact match.
There's a bike store sticker on the downtube from 1995.

Yes - I have a Trek 800 all steel mountain bike that I bought in 1992 the summer i started grad school. I have replaced many of the parts (bottom bracket, crank, pedals, front and rear wheels, brakes, rear cassette, shift levers, and I think the rear derailleur) but it still runs well. I think the brake levers are still original.
I use it as my slower commuter bike. It's very durable and since I replaced the wheels, it's not too slow. The new hubs on the wheels are pretty good quality and they were a vast improvement over the original wheels. I prefer to ride my Trek 520 now, since it's much quicker, but I still like my Trek 800 and don't want to put it away in the basement for storage (even though I haven't ridden it lately).
I love my Trek 800.

I still have my Supergo Access Comp steel Mt bike from 1987. It was a top of the line bike back then. Columbus tubing, Deore XT components with Biopace chainrings. It was around $600 which was a lot for 1987. I've tried to sell it a couple times over the years but glad I still have it. It does grocercy hauling duties now with the trailer.

Great bike... was able to meet and hang out with Chris Igleheart who has relocated to Portland... he worked for Fat Cycles until they closed and is responsible for that fork in it's design and build and may have very well built that bike as well.
Very cool guy to talk to as he has been involved in the industry for a long time and worked for some of the biggest names in the business as well as running his own.

96 GT Tequesta. Love the bike. I tour with it, ride with the kids or in the winter off-road when the road is too icy.

I'm sad that my 1992 Specialized Crossroads doesn't count, since it's a hybrid, though the wheels and tires are about the only difference between early '90's mountain bikes and hybrids. The handlebars and the chain are the only non-original items on my bicycle even now...

Sorry, it's not a '90s Hard Rock, I think it's an '88 as far as I can tell. It's my go-to bike.

i don't like the fact that this thread was bumped because it makes me weep for the '90s steel mountain bike that i no longer have.
she was killed by a bus two years go.
she was the best bike i ever owned.

I'm still rocking mine...
I also bought its exact twin a few months back off Craigslist for $20 and converted it into a 1x7. It wasn't in the greatest of shape but still rideable. I put another $30 and a few hours into it. The only issue with these older bikes is the wheels tend to be shot. The one I bought had the rear way out of true and the sopkes were seized up. I should be getting a replacement wheel from niagara this week.

Mine was stolen last year though technically it wasn't mine anymore anyway since I'd given it to my son. 
Didn't realize it until recently, but the ancestors of these mountain bikes were actually old cruisers. They were retrofitted with handlebars and brake levers from motorcycles.

All I own are '90 steel bikes - 4 of them.
I've got a pair of 1995 Diamondback Sorrentos my wife and I use for road riding,
I've got a 1998 Gary Fisher hoo koo e koo with an upgraded RockShox Judy that's still my main moutain bike, and
I recently bought a used 1993 Trek 800 for my son to learn to ride.

and i'm definitely glad to still be here as well, trust me. better the bike than me, absolutely. i think the fact that the bike took the brunt of the impact with that bus, sacrificing itself to save me, is a big reason why i still have such a strong emotional attachment to it.

Heres my 89'? Rockhopper Comp. All Deore: FT MT60 cranks, Biopace 28/38/48. 6-speed index thumbies that are pure heaven to use. Dont believe the U-brake haters...they rule! weight is low and out of the way....mine only need adjusting with normal pad wear. Mods: Nitto Technomic stem (tall). Big Apple tires: 2.35 front/ 2.15 rear on factory 28mm wide rims. KoolStop Salmon pads. Blackburn MT-1 rack
