From last night. 23 miles at a pace somewhere between casual and recovery just to get the legs moving after Saturday's 64 miles and Sunday's rest day. Welcome to rural Indiana

Gravity G29'er, 3 speed Shimano Nexus IGH, 46 tooth chainring, NC-17 Trekking Handlebar w/an adjustable stem, Dorcy duel bike lights up front, Schwalbe Big Ben's, and a seatpost bike rack with an ANNOYING trunk bag on the back (that's actually built like a TANK!).

I usually use this to get to and from work, I just luv how SOLID this bike feels & rides. And I get decent speed as well,... Hold's my 225lb plus butt quite well.

And here's my TernJoeP24. I added a Tern Cargo Rack (despite being spec'd for up to a 24' bike it fits the 26' wheeled TernJoeP24 perfectly), Planet Bike fenders, NC-17 Trekking Handlebars, Avenir Excursion Rack-Top Bag (I have the trunk bag from my prior post on it in this pic), Schwalbe Big Apple's, and MKS EZY MT-E detachable pedals. Another excellent ride that handles my weight and riding without a hitch.

It was forecast to be right at the century mark today in the desert, so Jayna and I headed up to the hills to get in a few miles. She really wanted to get some exercise. There was a fire burning in the hills right above Big Bear City. A local said it was either stared when a meth lab blew up or by a kid playing with a firecracker.

Since the smoke was raising straight up and not falling onto the lake, we decided to ride our loop around the lake. Jayna freaked out a few miles into the ride and wanted to turn back. She was afraid that the car would be a burnt cinder when we got back to it. Also that she didn't want to breath smoke. I told her neither of those things were going to happen and pushed her on. She's glad we finished the ride.

It was interesting watching the helicopter operations fighting the fire. They'd swoop in over the lake to fill their water buckets and would fly a set pattern back to the fire. One drop after another, over and over. Those guys had their routine down pretty well.

On the way home, we listened to a radio report and they said the fire was only 30% contained. This was right when it got dark. Going to be a long night on the mountain.

On top of Mount Carbon near Denver - foot hills are only a couple miles away, with Red Rocks off to the right. This is how hazy it has been from the fires out west

Yep, we've got the same awesome bike!

It's all Shimano 11 speed Ultegra with 11-32 cassette.

Tell me about your saddle. The Fizik Antares on my bike is new but I don't see me keeping it.

Same here. 6800 with the 11-32. I need the all the help I can get on the hills. Compact on the front, so I can go as low as 34/32. Could use taller than 50/11, but not often enough to give up the low, low gearing. Got the frame from Castle Hill in Austin. Except for closeouts, they don't sell frames or bikes as of earlier this year and are concentrating of fits instead. I'm bummed about that because I've been eying a Pinarello FCX in the same color scheme, (I'm not a fan of the all-black trend from everybody the past couple years).

The saddle is a Sella SMP Lite 209. I have one of those on all by bikes, (mostly Pinarellos). It is the first saddle I tried that 'didn't make me numb down there'. Major disadvantage is that you have only one sit position. You can't slide back or forth at all. The SMP comes in various widths and different levels of padding. The Lite 209 is pretty much in the middle of both parameters, and a Specialized Body Fit said it was the correct width for me. Padding is a personal choice that depends on how many miles one rides at a time and how often they ride. More padding is fine for shorter and infrequent rides, but will make you really sore on long rides. Hard padding is like sitting on a plank. The Lite 209 is a good compromise, at least for me.

Ride safe.

I haven't found saddle nirvana yet (numbness) but I'm going to look into the Selle SMP line. This Fizik isn't going to work out for me.

Yep I also need all the help I can get while climbing so also a compact in front. I got a good deal on my bike at Bikeman in Palm Desert. Excellent very small bike shop that's sells mostly Pinarello.

Our small group ride stopped at an interesting place in Pitt Co NC last week that brought back images of the cold war era. A Voice of America, Edward R. Murrow transmission facility that looks to have 100+ towers spread out over a huge rural campus. My phone camera doesn't zoom, so you may have to look hard to see some of the distant towers on the photo of the US Gov sign.

edit : Make that 160 + towers, Raleigh N&O article: https://www.newsobserver.com/entertai...e35816307.html

Some pics from my first metric century. The group rode down to San Marcos to hop in the river in remembrance of one of their cycling friends.
