I have been using it in the pitch black for the past two week right before sunrise, and I find it sufficient. The light isn't very focused, so you don't get a lot of distance, maybe 15-20 feet. After that, potholes, manholes, sticks, and other objects are harder to see. A second headlight that is tightly focused at 30 feet might be in my future. Having a backup light is a smart idea anyways, but I'm not that smart yet.
