Thanks for that info. I was guessing Shimano IGHs but wasn't certain. What are the differences between an Alfine and a Nexus hub?

Hi, if you refer to the 8-speed versions, my Birdy mounts the "Premium" Nexus 8 hub (model with the red band), in this case essentially the difference is that the Alfine 8 has high end finiture and can fit disks; for more infos: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/nexus8.shtml

It's a chain, but it has the chain cover that the Speed Uno came with. I just converted it to a 3 speed Shimano Nexus hub,...coaster brake to keep it original. Quite a solid riding bike.

Not to thrilled about using a handle bar bag. Makes the steering real quick.
Out on an errand. Had to stop for some java!

I really haven't been riding it all that much, so I've only put about 20 or so miles on it. It's definitely a bit stiff,...

I've ordered a set of cone wrenches, and I'm going to ever so slightly adjust the cone nuts on the hub. The drag is so bad I slow down going down short hills. I think this, plus riding it a bit more, should do the trick.

You think the cone nuts are overtight, tds?

i need to replace most of the front end of my i4, after the Mezzo released the front wheel on me last week; sending me over the handlebars.

it still runs, but I can feel it's not as free as it was- the wheel is out of true, and the front QR took a dent...

Yeah, the cone nuts are a bit snug. Mine need a slight bit of a turn to be spinning smoothly.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I like the mezzo, but too high maintenance for my tastes. And the wheel coming loose sounds more like a safety problem to me. Did you check out the mezzo thread? They're the people who can give you some advice on what to do.

thanks for coming back to me tds-

the Mezzo isn't the only bike I've got; I'm just riding it at the moment a lot, as I've just got it- yeah; I've seen the dedicated thread and it's my name down as the last poster; from ten days ago! - It's all slowed down a bit in Mezzo land

did you get the cone-nut tool?

I received the wrenches, adjusted the cone nuts, then realized the brakes were also a bit "off" in the rear, so I adjusted that as well. The bike rides a bit smoother, but the hub still needs a bit of riding time to loosen up. Still too much drag,... If the hub was in a larger sized wheel it would spin better,...but being a 16" wheel it's got less mass to keep it spinning. Kinda reminds me of the NuVinci N360 hub I had on my old Xootr Swift,...I loved the bike, I HATED the hub. Fast, but wayyy too much drag.

Hey Linberl-

that pakiT is a peach- how heavy is it?; I really like the stripped down look of it- looks perfect for those trails...

That Dahon is tremendous tds- is that rolling on 16"s?- I love the mudguard!
(I've never thought about hubs freeing-off with age; there's hope for some of the stuff I've got yet!)
