If the cold air is really killing your lungs, use a balaclava - the air you breathe will be warm and humid.

This morning, for instance, was definitely balaclava weather.

I use one when it's 40 or below

Hey, which way were you going? I might have been one of the 5.

In my 6.5 miles, I saw 4 runners, 4 walkers, 1 guy with his dog, and 2 cyclists. I'm starting to recognize these people.

I wouldn't say I "missed it", Bob...

+100 for Office Space!

I promise you, though, you will learn to love riding in winter. Oh yes, you will. Once it gets down into the teens, there's absolutely nobody on the trail, the weather is beautiful, and the air is so dense you can drink it. As long as you have the gear for it, it's just as warm as riding any other time.

After last winter (my first) I started dreading nice weather and the clueless trail zombies it brings.

Don't misunderstand me - I love riding in winter. I would have gladly strapped on my bibtights and balaclava, silk liners and wool socks had it not been for my busted lungs.

I've heard that bike commuters miss FEWER days of work than other workers.
But when ya feel crappy, ya gotta listen to your body.

My son is in the same boat as you are and with his asthma he has been miserable. I was in the ER with him on Saturday as they thought it might be turning into pneumonia.

So given you could knock yourself out of action for weeks if it worsened, good choice.

I'm a firm believer given the choice of a day or two off vs out of action for a week or more, I'd take the day or two.

I park either at Reston (by 7-11) or Hunter Mill Road and ride into Arlington. Pretty much every day. Last week or so been riding my MTB (Silver/black disc hardtail Trek) but the preference is my Lemond road bike. anywhere from 6-7am in the morning, leave Arlington 6 pm.

Well...look, I'm not gonna tell you what you gotta do. But the statement "I can't miss a day of work" doesn't make sense to me. Oh, I know what people mean when they say it -- I don't have any paid sick days, I don't have any vacation days left, I've got this really big important whatsis -- but not every sickness is something you can just soldier through, and if you get sicker, you're not gonna have a choice in the matter. You know this, so I won't belabor the issue, but really...think about what you're saying.

It makes sense when your job might be on the line. Maybe you should talk to his boss.

I mean, really, giving (or seeing) a presentation isn't that bad.

I'm not trying to be a tough guy, just doing the bare minimum to keep my project rolling.

And was his job on the line? And what about the fact that getting sicker could put him in the hospital, where he'd have to "take a sick day" whether his "job was on the line" or not? Pretending there are no limits doesn't make any sense at all.
