Ugh…my race Saturday was an unmitigated disaster. Like a black hole opening in front of you in real time.
I was not DFL, but pretty close. The weather in New England has been awful. Thursday and Friday were in the 90s, but a storm rolled through Friday night and by the start of the race on Saturday morning, it was 48*, but it did get to a balmy 51*!
I did it in 1:53:XX. I got annihilated on the swim and my 2:15/100yd time blew up to about 2:46. I had to backstroke a part of it. While we were standing in the cold watching the prior waves go off, my asthma got the better of me and I forgot to give my wife my spare inhaler. And then when I got about 200yds in, I felt my chest tighten (not because of the wetsuit, but a bronchial spasm) and then it was all downhill. The swim was supposed to be 1/3mi but it ended up being about 125yds longer than that. T1 was a killer because it’s hard taking off a wetsuit while wheezing with chattering teeth, and then putting on bike gear.
Bike was unspectacular which was both good and bad. There was a lot of open road and the scenery itself was gorgeous, but I never recovered from the swim. The run was actually better than I expected at 33:XX, but quite a ways off my 29:30ish target. T2 actually wasn’t bad, but I can probably find some time to save and go under 3 minutes.
It I’m signed up for another one at the end of August. I’ll take this experience into summer training for sure and make the next one better. But I’m glad this one is over.

With zero judgement, I was thinking Oly from the time, but with a 1/3mile swim, maybe a sprint? Non-standard, regardless. Transition is all about what you need; I wasn't even good and sub-2 for T2 was just a matter of run in, rack bike, remove helmet, remove shoes, shove on running shoes, grab race belt to attach while running to exit. For a ~30 minute run of any distance that should be all you need.
I say that without having done a T2 in years and might oughtta check one of my actual results, but I think that had gotten pretty quick.

Personally, I'm really enjoying the simplicity my 1x gravel bike setup, and it has all the range I need for where I ride.

I rode down to the bike shop. The air was thicker than usual. Air quality index around 140. By 6pm is was around 200. I did not ride home. Mrs. rjones28 came and took me out for cheesesteaks.

Is it normal for tires to were down flat like instead of staying round? Everytime I bring one of my bikes to the shop they comment on my tires . All of my tires have roughly 1000 miles on them, wear marks are clearly visible. Always make it sound like it’s a problem.

I was starting to get tire conscious.
Training crits start Thursday. Was hoping to participate but what ever this infection is has left me feeling weak on the bike. Unless I magically get better by then I prolly won’t go.

Thanks!
Yeah - I got a whole bunch of info from this adventure. It was a sprint, and I did with my BIL who is an Oly and 70.3 guy and we have a plan for late August. The swim ended up being closer to 700yds, which isn’t bad - been doing 800s-1000s for a while - but was unexpected.
My T2 time was just over 3 minutes and I know I have a lot of room for improvement there. I am psyched for the next one!
If I may... swim more. It's not that hard to get to repeating 100s on 1:40 SCY, and then you will not only outswim most triathletes, you'll hit the bike feeling good. And in adverse conditions, you'll make up even more time.
With zero judgement, I was thinking Oly from the time, but with a 1/3mile swim, maybe a sprint? Non-standard, regardless. Apparently the Mog is out there but hard to find. Western Bike Works has the frameset for $5500 with a limit of 1 per customer.

totally normal, mine flatten like this within 750 miles or so, by 1000 they’re very squared off. i run pretty low pressures which might make the flat spot a little wider.
