Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd hit that. Hard and often. Is this in lieu of a get well card? If so, thanks.

I didn't know you had surgery or I would have sent a card addressed as follows:

Velo vol

USA

I'm sure it would have arrived promptly.

I also wanted to do it solo so I wouldn't have to try and keep up with anyone and could go easy or stop whenever I wanted. One of my friends insists that I could train back into shape to chase the century riders through the hills every week.
I don't know if I can but mainly I don't know if I want to. I know guys older than I am who do that stuff but I don't know if I can be one of them. First, I have no discipline with diet or training or anything. Also, I'm 200 pounds and dragging that up every hill is harder than those 150 pound guys (or 110 pound women) have it.
Yesterday I did ok, no cramps or nausea or terrible suffering but the last couple hours I was wondering if I want to do it again. Getting into sucky car traffic after hours of quiet didn't help. I'll be 67 this week and maybe I can be happy doing 4 to 6 hour rides.
you're 67 and only do 4 to 6 hour rides? That's a sure sign the end is nigh.

stop making me feel bad.

Kudos on the birthday.

Update:

Got this today to mow the lawns. Getting rid of my 10 year old Honda/Briggs & Stratton that weighed 96 pounds with a full tank of gas. this one is Acme level quality and 56 pounds fully dressed.

I guess going to a lightweight, battery powered lawn mower is a sign I'm starting to get old.

I should weigh mine, with and without grass catcher. No batteries or ICE on mine though, straight up human power.

All of my lawn equipment is the cordless kobalt. Works well, happy with it. Weed wacker, bush wacker, and chain saw are all Kobalt. My lawn mower is a 235 cc honda monster that I couldnt pick up if I tried.

Flew home late last night with the sole purpose to go on a ride and then turn around and leave again. Unfortunately the roads were still to wet this morning to take The Ritchey out and my cervelo is still deflated so no ride at all. Can’t win them all.

Happy birthday to those afflicted.
57 miles today, to cold and windy for it. Forecast was for a high of 55 degrees and 9mph winds.. the winds are in the 20s....
I rode Contadore with the new 55mm tubeless ready rims with brand new continental gp 4000sII's on it. Very nice!!
Broke 30 mph on Belle isle. I like these wheels a lot. Nice and stiff.
I still think the 4000's are better than the 5k's. They feel faster to my assometer.
also put an "all in" bid on a house yesterday. Got a feeling it's going higher than my offer. At this point I'd rather just throw in the towel, stay here, refi this mortgage, and sell when the market gets its head on straight. To much stress for me.
