Same here, I love non-technical single track, but anything more than a 2" thick stick or piece of gravel and I'm out. At least around here hard to find - for some reason it seems all off road needs to be "mountain biking" that requires more tech skills that I'm guessing only a few possess.

Mountain biking is all the things I don't like about cycling, but I'm glad it makes others happy.

With some items Costco discounts are even better than Apple Store but Costco tends to have only some configurations.

My wife and road mountain bikes in the pre-kid years. One day she hit a big root, and endod over it. Got pissed, picked up the bike, and body slammed it to the ground.
All I could say was, “Next time, derailleur side up.”

I will stick with pavement whenever possible.

On some level its about having the right tool for the job. There is a great diversity of bicycle and riding styles within MTB. I don't particularly enjoy being "underbiked", which it sounds like you were datlas. Maybe it would have been more enjoyable with a more capable bike.
I've owned hardtail MTBs since the beginning, only over demo'd or borrowed a FS. I think my next new bike purchase may finally be a FS frame, shuttle all my components over. Still more on the lighter travel/XC side since I mostly pedal and don't send it real big, but man what a difference. The top XC bikes are all super light and stiff these days anyways, esp with the remote lockouts and whatnot. Only the most mundane of XC courses see the pros select a HT over FS.

If I am not looking to train, race, or do some hammer group road ride, I will often select MTB.

It seemed many of our road races incorporated "dirt". Depending on the previous weather pattern, dirt could be construed as gravel, washboard, pavement-like smoothness, or many other surfaces. I didn't like it, but of course the CX guys were all in. I equated it to racing a crit at midnight, and putting supreme trust in the wheel ahead of you.

And in related news, it was NBD recently. It is a Giant Revolt Advanced 2, marketed as a gravel bike. Needs some modifying and haven't started adjusting or fitting. Intent is for this to be more of an all-roads style and shoulder months bike, perhaps endurance bike with a second wheel and tire set. Then it is on to the trainer so that my BMC stays off the trainer in the good weather months. Ordered around Thanksgiving, indicated schedule didn't matter and it showed up on the eve of Christmas eve day
