Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, Box Hill on Zwift kicked me in the face pretty good for at least 20 minutes and now Strava is showing an estimated FTP of 159. Seems close to the right amount of bad.

And on that note: my watts/kg is kind of sad as well, but that is highly correlated to me weighing 111 kgs at the present moment.

People are so petty.
As we say in academics, the politics are so dirty because the stakes are so small.

I just read a letter of recommendation in which the person writing the letter said he cannot recommend the candidate. Which begs the question: Is it implied that you will recommend the person for whatever they're applying for if you agree to write him/her a recommendation?

IMO this recipe is a showcase for paprika. I sometimes make it with regular sweet paprika. Sometimes with smoked paprika, which increases the interestingness of the soup. My current batch is made with half hot paprika, which is a mix of sweet and hot paprika. This gives it real bite and character. Simple dish but so tasty.

I get my paprikas here: https://www.penzeys.com/shop/spices/

Thanks! That’s right up our alley. We buy almost all our spices at Penzeys, who have a retail store fairly close by and we always have sweet, sharp, and smoked paprika in the house.

Freezing rain outside today so I used the weather as an opportunity to pull the tubes out of my MTB wheels and put sealant in them since both the wheels and tires are tubeless ready. The rims are even tapeless. I guess the previous owner preferred tubes.

Anyway, pull tubes, insert TL valves, add sealant, and hit them with the compressor and snap! bang! instant TL wheels in under 30 minutes.

That seems unprofessional for a professional. My FIL is a physics professor who does a lot of research work and I feel like I remember him talking about turning a student down for a recommendation letter. That seems like a much more straightforward way to do it than send someone on their way with a sabotaged "recommendation" letter.

I agree. The sabotage description is spot on, and his actions were extremely weird and underhanded.

For me it is. I would never write a bad letter for a trainee.

I had the issue come up with a very bright postdoc who just stopped showing up and owed me two good papers I could ill afford to lose at the time, but she went to work for a consulting firm and never asked.

One of my residency supervisors wrote me a borderline unenthusiastic letter for fellowship and I thought that sucked.

Well, yeah, unless your main objective is to do them harm.

TT?

Rainy time trial does sound fun. Well at least more fun than pretty much any other kinda rainy bike race.

I was stunned to come to realize how petty otherwise intelligent, scientific academia's could be. Funny thing is, the alternate road I chose to take was likely the better choice for me anyway. Definitely more exciting and interesting.

Rain sucks, but riding on wet roads covered in grit and salt is just as annoying. I've had to wash my bike after each ride for the last 5 days. @WhyFi can confirm level of bike filth.

Eh, it’s in my genes and it’s all I’ve ever known, My little academic bubble is actually in a protected corner of the federal government, so it’s a little different.

What road did you take? Hudson Valley sounds like Big Blue.

I guess I'm not totally re-Phoenicized yet. Tights and long sleeve shirt were just a hair too warm.
