BTW, I don't really have a problem with you ****ing up your nice old bikes. I have got mine, so there will be at least a few nice examples left after you fellows go back to whatever rock you came out from under. It's just that when the thread went from fooling with old Univegas and Panasonics to defacing frames that may well have been built by Ugo himself, well, I couldn't contain myself.
Hopefully you'll all find a way to live with that.

If you see it sitting unattended and get the urge to grab and go, make sure you close the rear skewer first.
Just looking out for your safety.

six jours get a grip things just are not as bad as you seem to think they are... life is all good even if folks put newer components on their older bikes.... that is not so bad after all... some of us old folks like to have one foot in the past and one in the present... makes us not feel so old. Or something... heheheheeheh

Not only that, but the new drivetrain bits are sooooooo much better than that nasty old crap. Why squat in the dirt around a fire when you have a nice warm house you can live in.

As a courier, I find that the durability, crisp handling, and all-day comfort of vintage steel, combined with the reliability and safety of a modern drivetrain and braking system, makes for a fine city bike. Ergo levers allow you to maintain a heads-up riding position in traffic at all times, and as for braking, get back to me after you've worked a hilly, rainy Vancouver winter on a set of 1980's Modolo Speedy's.
I've broken or worn out original vintage components, and it's often not economically viable to source period-correct replacements, if even possible. Why not upgrade instead of replace?
