Best way to soften the gearing

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I would get a shimano 9sp mtb derailleur (Deore XT or similar) and MT 8000 series 10sp cassette. They are available in 11-32, 11-34, 11-36.
10sp Shimano Mtb derailleurs changed the pull ratio and will not be compatible with your 10sp road levers.

Mixing road and mtb is often trouble, but cable pull ratio converters do exist. Search for Tanpan or Jtek. Certain combination do work without converter as mentioned above.

i had a compact Chorus setup but a 29 large cog was low as Campy went in Chorus or Record. I am disappointed that they do not offer a l lower gear. I suppose I could have put my triple back on but did not feel like going backwards. Oh well, I loved Campy for 42 years but my new bike with Ultegra Di2 is quite nice!
