Sorry, no Powerbuilder. Why not MS SQL Server Express 2008? It's free and does triggers, etc.

Outsourced clouds are big on hype and short on delivery. There are many, many issues with them.

Making a kilometer blurry
My next task: produce an Android map tile server. Yeah, that shouldn't be any problem between my flights out to support "customer" demos and stroking all the management status reports for everyone. IRAD projects are really fun when they start, but when they start to become products, the transition is not smooth (requirements ramp up about six months before resources).
On the surface, this is a really fun problem, and I'll enjoy learning the ins and outs of GIS, but I have too much other crap to do to get this product out the door.

Given the fact that a lot of websites we all visit are hosted in one cloud or another, it seems to work for many of us daily. I'm not saying it will work for every situation, but it's an option for some, and many have gone that way.
At any rate, I'm just glad I'm not in IT.. I hope you guys have fun with those servers! I'll be over here on the client-side, in my quiet office. Actually there's a server room right across the hallway, and it's super-loud every time they open the door. I feel for you guys.

Like most outsourcing, it can work exceedingly well for certain things. What you don't hear enough of are the issues.
Websites are perfect for clouds.
Please note that I have nothing against virtualization, which is the engine of the cloud. It's here to stay and can really leverage hardware assets. It is not the right answer for every application, just like all of the technological breakthroughs before it.

This is why I gave up on Android development. (many different OS versions, few users are on the latest)
At least, that was one of the reasons.. at first it seemed so awesome, since I'm good with Java and suck at Objective-C... but it's a huge headache to compile for 4+ platforms, that don't all have the same featuresets. I hope they solve that problem at some point..

+.5 I avoid triggers for the most part. But there are some instances where they are useful. "Databases are for relational data storage" is too strict a rule to live by. An application such as an interface between 2 DBs could be built entirely with T-SQL. I wouldn't want to bring in another tool and increase the level of complexity just to conform to some rule.

You're hitting the brakes on an easy turn at 36mph? I think you need to curb your fear a little.

ok, that was a bit snarky... but you sort of asked for it. the middle section of the pass can have some mean gusts of wind which can easily blow you off course. otherwise yes, it's not at all technical and wouldn't really require much if any braking.
this being the geek thread my point was more like, hey check out this software i wrote that overlays your trajectory on the road surface...

taking descending advice from someone in indiana would be like having your mom tell you how to pee standing up. it's weird and it just doesn't work.

And yes, the overlay is interesting from a geeky view.

Nice work! I'm assuming Android or iPhone? Is it augmenting the video, or is that a video of screen captures done in real time?
(Just curious. I've written an AR engine for Android)

it's a mix of c and objective c. i'm taking video from a contour cam and parsing the data from the corresponding tcx/fit file. overlay rendered using opengl and video export using quicktime. i haven't used dashcam but it's something along those lines. i had a moral objection to paying for something i could easily do myself
i'm curious to see what contour will do with their gps/bluetooth cam preview, but i've got an older model myself. it's not realtime AR in the sense that it's not "predicting" your trajectory, but rather using your lat/lon/altitude to draw it from your current position. you can of course review the video with the overlay before exporting.
and i'm not doing much atm to try to compute a proper up vector for the camera. meh. but have a couple ideas about how this might work. ultimately, i'd still have to do some guesstimation to get the banking to look right unless i collected that data.
here's what the interface looks like to tweak the alignment:

and i think i meant "dashware" -- although contour announced some sort of realtime preview for their gps cam at CES earlier this month.
i haven't released it under any sort of license. just given it to a couple friends to try out. really don't plan on trying to make money off of it either. i was sort of hoping to release something and get people to donate to cancer research if they used it.

Nice! How long did it take to process the video above? What did you use for the FIT file parsing?
If you don't want to hassle with open sourcing it yourself you could contribute it to GoldenCheetah.

crap. Campus PPD just told me, "No sir, that unit you thought was 15 tons is actually only a 7.5 ton unit".
Well.. Let's see, my calculated heat load was around 6 tons, and then the left over space cooling is substantial, so yeah that'd explain why it isn't keeping up...
I need to have a long talk with the engineer who told me that unit was 15 tons. Unfortunately, tracking him down as of late has been about as easy as finding unicorns.
