Most tubular tires these days have removable cores. Keep a couple spare cores around (they can be purchased separately, or salvaged from old inner tubes), and swap them in when you get a plugged core. Drop the plugged core into some household ammonia solution and let it soak a while to dissolve the latex, blow clean with compressed air and put it in your spare valve core collection, ready for the next time you find a plugged core.

Anyway, I carry my sealant now. Makes for a longer stop to seal a flat, but never a valve stem concern. I very rarely flat.
I've been carrying Velox compressed sealant lately, but haven't had a chance to try it. Yet.
