We can give it a try at 5:50am, and again at the Cayucas pier for those that are there.

We can try 5:50 but I think the pier is the only real possibility for a decent group photo. If we meet at the start before the first few start groups of La Via Dello Scalatore it'll be too dark to take a picture (plus we'll all be too sleepy looking). If we can all agree to push off with the first group which will likely occur at 6:00 am or shortly thereafter we will be at the Cayucos pier in around 45 minutes. I'm sure the difference between fastest and slowest wouldn't be more than 10 minutes. That just means that the first arrivals would have time to grab a bit of food and walk out on the pier and the late arrivals would need to come straight to the photo shoot before snacking. Basically, if you want to be in the group photo start with the 6 am group go to the pier upon arrival in Cayucos (even if they move that rest stop somewhere else this year). .

For those of you arriving in Cambria today - The CR crew is meeting up at 1 30 for a little ride, 10 miles or so up the coast, recon the route, then turn around and come back in search of a beer.
Meet up point will be the parking lot at the corner of Main and Bridge streets. 1 30 depart, and back by 3. Rain more than a drizzle cancel. Weather is forecast cloudy chance of showers.

OK, just received an official Eroica email with the official line that lights are required before 6:30 am.
Therefore, since many folks don't like to carry lights, I'm going to suggest that rather than leaving at 6:00 am to head to Cayucos Pier for a group photo we plan to leave at 6:30 instead. Does that suit everyone?

I'm signed up for the short route. Is there any reason I couldn't ride down to Cayucos with the climbers and then back to Cambria for my 9:30 start?

Finally got the course loaded into my Garmin - the profile looks a lot more scary on here than it does on the web page.

I'm good with a 6:30 start. Got here tonight, checked out the venue. Town is a bit twee but good food and drink available.
Eroica venue...might be disappointing. We shall see what it looks like in daylight. Much vaunted '10 best sellers from Eroica Gaiole with a container of vintage stuff to sell' did not come, just the same Italian fellow from last year.
Regardless, much fun will be had, great riding and fellowship, etc. Cold beer tomorrow!

I won't be able to make the pre-ride. I will be leaving Santa Barbara at noon and then grabbing my brother in Los Olivos.
Does anybody have the latest location of the sign in area for this afternoon?

The last up hill dirt slog was ridiculous! If it was 20 miles in, it would be no problem, but after many hours in the saddle........yikes!
My brother Marc is the most unprepared cyclist ever. He flats, and pulls out his spare. My jaw dropped, it was an ancient used tubular (creased and dry rotted) and to add insult to self inflicted injury, there was no valve core. Some totally cool guy on a Paramount saves the day with a spare tire.
The last downhill was the ultimate reality check for vintage brakes. My Modolos were woefully inadequate (even with Kool-stop pads), and on one turn I had to yell ahead to a group of cyclists "Modolo brakes!..... I'm coming through!" They yielded to the left, as I banged the hard right to just make it. Loads of fun!
I was joking with my brother about the vintage bike guys that tout Delta brakes as functional/adequate. They need to put their money where their mouth is and bomb the last downhill. Triple dog dare. I only saw one set of Deltas, and it was on a woman's bike, and she weighed no more 110 pounds.
As to gearing, the 43-30 chimp gear is totally adequate (at least for my present fitness) and I promised a report if the Mavic SSC can handle the 52-43/14-30 and it does perfectly.
