The red/yellow/black was offered beyond 1983 if you wanted it. It was so popular that people did look for this in the panasonic era and it might be possible (although unlikely) to find original paint frames painted this way. Also while there were stock colours listed for all frames I'm pretty sure I've read that SBDU would paint in any colour you wanted.

But do your homework because there was a fake on ebay last year for well over $1k.
Oh man, they created a fake Serial Number? Jeez

I picked this Worksop 531c up on Ebay a year or so. It's a smidge too big for me, and has a couple of seemingly "artful"? decal fixes. It was picked by a guy out of an estate sale in Beverly hills (supposedly "found on a closet"). I hadn't seen the livery much on this side of the pond, and was intrigued. It's a neat bike, but just not me for a few reasons. Im going to find it a new home soon.

I was just thinking - if it wasn't for the Gipiemme dropouts, a 1984 Raleigh Competition 12 could pass for an SBDU. Same shot-back stays, and Prugnat S4 lugs. Same for the '84 Road-Ace 12, though I don't know what dropouts it had.

Gotta be careful when you're in the market for one of these. The post-1982 UK market lightweights have some very nice details not seen on any of the US-market bikes, but they're also fairly difficult to identify due to their relative low numbers stateside.

Kurt, I assumed that that "SB" S/N would ensure it's real, maybe not?

Still in progress, SB1799, the wheels need a final true, and the decals.

That’s not a deal.

This is a deal.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293701344070

Gone in < 45 minutes for £150. And seller might be able to recover the outlay by selling off the parts.

Admittedly not an Ilkeston but still an SBDU. Maybe a stretch to repaint it in red/yellow/black team colours but still a bargain.

I see a dent in the drive side chainstay, but not a crack.

Could it be that the OP's seller was inspired to make up this story by virtue of the dented chainstay, if, in fact, he found a buyer willing to pay more?

What size bike do you ride? I have a friend with an SBDU in his garage. High mileage but better than what you were looking at.

57 is my sweet spot. Thanks so much for the offer! I've picked up a couple since this incident. I'm more concerned that someone is going to get taken.

Just as a note, if it wasn't obvious, but the seller this time around is different than the one previously listed. I think Kurt's story might not be too farfetched. Maybe the guy even wanted to keep it at the time rather than sell?

If there is a crack still then it's a bit strange he'd be able to find point out the dent and not the crack.

Alternatively, it could have actually been fixed as mentioned before.

True, maybe just not disclosed. At SBDU prices, this one has enough questions... if it got fixed, just explain it.

Unless I’m missing something it would seem unlikely, unlucky and unfortunate the frame was repaired and has since accrued a new dent in the same chainstay.

There's nothing that's been said yet that the chainstay was ever replaced, nor any evidence to suggest it was ever resprayed since the last time we saw it.

All is conjecture unless someone asks the current seller about this presumed chainstay crack. If they're on the level, they'll check it and send pictures.

It's back again on ebay ..

It just showed backup on ebay with the original pictures from when I won it, no Serial Number mentioned in text, and no mention of the damage. I would be extremely cautious with this one!
