The owners are cyclists. I know the husband from the bike shop. He's an avid mountain biker. Their brand is named for the popular MTB trails adjacent to SU.

The guy I know would like to work more, as I understand it. He talked about having to "bid" for work. I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds an awful lot like having to work for cheap. My knowledge on this is pretty minimal, and based on my conversation with this one person.

It's the amount that's the problem - a job that pays < $14K/year and doesn't allow you to take other work seems like a really terrible deal!

Great dog pics from yesterday, LAJ . no way was I reviewing the whole year, but just glancing at the yesterday shots its always good to see pups.
Safe to assume you are still a Colorado denizen? I should have looked in for your Christmas display, as I recall you always doing the nines.
Bah Humbug , you still a Texan? And I would assume still a tri athelete (pardon the expression).
HeyBillyD , hope all is well. And I won't guess where Lester is now. Is it safe to ask if there is still a Ramona? (I won't try the fancy at in case its bad juju)

I may have to concede a point to the youngsters. If you compare minimum and entry level wages from say 1985 (when I was 20) to now, the difference is roughly double….but housing, living expenses, tuition, and healthcare (big ticket costs) are roughly triple.
The wage difference evens out for college-educated salaries (triple like expenses), but for entry-level/retail/unskilled, the difference is real.

Well, the advantage of the pace bots is that they really do stick to their power targets. The disadvantage is that, IRL, almost nobody pushes the same power on the flats, up the climbs, and down the descents. I end up dropping the pace bot on climbs, and then it zooms by on the descents and I have to catch up.

I saw something on this the other day. For decades, sentiment about the economy has been consistently trending downwards, no matter what the economy is actually doing. Take the current moment - inflation is getting back down to the 2-3% level; unemployment has been lower for longer than it's been in at least 50 years; real incomes are rising, especially at the lower end; economic growth has been consistently good for a couple years now. And yet 60-70% say the economy is terrible, while at the same time, 60-70% say their own economic situation is good or great. Similarly, most people say the local economy is good, but the national economy is awful. And people are spending like they're feeling good about the economy, too - which is one reason why the economy is so good.
There's a disconnect between perceptions and reality and it's been growing for decades.
There's a disconnect between perceptions and reality and it's been growing for decades.
There was a Planet Money show that went into this topic. A couple of possible reasons for the disconnect:
- it's been a long time since people have experienced inflation
- pandemic stimulus checks have stopped
- social media exists, which makes everything seem worse

I went to Sacramento State College for $86/semester in 72/73. I got my aircraft maintenance degree, and then license at Sacramento City College, for free. The first two years at Miami of Ohio were, I think, around $7000/ year. And then I dropped out at 23. I would have been a good candidate for a gap year, if such a thing had been a thing at that time.

I’ve bought plenty of used underwear in my life. I don’t get the problem you have. Do you also not wear your own underwear after it’s been through the wash? I do, lately, buy new underwear, but nothing else new, unless used is unavailable.I have yet to run across used cycling kit.

First you have reserve pilots and line holder pilots. Reserve pilots are pilots on call. They have different duty periods through out the day, so they bid for the duty period they want (on call periods) and what days off they want.
Line holders bid for trips. One can go a pick specific trips or one can put in a generic bid and let the computer build the schedule. Each month based on the amount of flying, a hourly target is given for the month and the computer will build your schedule based on that number and what you picked. It’s a blessing and a curse.

As I understand it from pilot brother, bidding is about which flights you get put on to not directly how much payment one is willing to accept. Those with higher seniority get to pick the preferred flights. This can lead to difference in pay as pilots are paid from "door close to door open" iirc. The whole payment and selection in the airlines is off the rail bonkers the more I hear about it. For instance, my brother currently chooses to not be a captain so as to maintain his seniority so as to be awarded the better flight he bids on.
This is why I am not upgrading currently to Captain. If I upgrade I will have zero control over my schedule. I’ll miss Birthdays, Holidays etc. So yea I’m taking a pay cut but I get almost what I want every month. Now if I could just get all commutable trips every month.
