70-miler with a definite commitment to the flats. trying to hit 1,200 miles for august. sdsu area west to the edge of ocean beach and
south thru dtown sd to chula vista and around the horn on the bayshore bike path up to coronado and back down/around and up to natti city and back home.
overcast and coolish half the ride, mid-70's second half of the ride. late start so plenty of cyclists out but not the usual sunday multitudes
that crush meaningful miles early at that point. have done plenty of climbing this month but looks like i need to do the über-steep + long
stuff suddenly. unfortunately, i know just where to find it. so much for the flatitudes...

Saturday...JPL - Flint Cyn - Cherry Cyn - Glendale Sports Complex. This circuit gives me a mix of climbing efforts, lots of singletrack, good shade, and enough time/miles/effort to be a stretch of my current fitness. It's become one of my favorite rides out my door. https://www.strava.com/activities/7671166636
Sunday...I wasn't really feeling motivation to ride solo on the road, so I got on my MTB again, and headed to the climb up to Henninger Flats. It's a lot of pavement to and from the start of the climb, but it's a ride I haven't done in 20+ years. The climb from Eaton Canyon to Henninger Flats is 2.4 mi of wide, smooth, fireroad at an avg. of 10%. On a weekend morning, the road is heavy with foot traffic. The climb is demanding because of the grade, and the scenery at the top is nice, but the descent back down is the same way you come up, so it's slow and cautious in order to dodge people and pets. On the way up, I got passed by a guy on an e-bike wearing Crocs and a big floppy hat (no helmet), and putting out very little effort. There's no reason I need to do this ride again any time soon. https://www.strava.com/activities/7677279897

inspired by Eric F to dust off the old MTB and get her dirty again. Lunch ride up Black Mt here in San Diego. Single tracks through Miner's ridge to get back down. Happy to have these trails in my backyard.

51-miler from solana beach up along the coast to o-side, then bounced east along the dedicated bike path (roughly parallel to ca hwy 76) out to mission san luis rey.
returned same way. nice day out. started off a little cloudy but clearly up shortly after 1:30pm and stayed clear remainder of the ride.

Mostly all around Newport and Irvine. Up and down PCH to get their from Seal Beach. One thing I have noticed is that traffic seems very light.
Sunday - 44 miles
Tuesday - 60 miles

Yesterday I did 20 miles up-and-down Griffith Park during midday. Every pedal stroke felt heavy and painful in the heat! The only reason I ride at Griffith is that if I stick to fire roads I can pretty much go all out without worrying about cars, other than the occasional ranger truck or film crew.

Rolled out for an low-effort spin on my road bike, with a plan of doing easy laps around the 5k loop at the Rose Bowl. On my first lap, a good friend rolled up next to me, and we nudged each other along into a solid and steady tempo effort for the next 15 miles. It was definitely more effort than intended. I felt pretty good, and I can feel my fitness growing. (25mi, 1200')... https://www.strava.com/activities/7701060186

Got it. I am still working on waking up early enough to pass through that area (before South Coast Plaza opens) to try the SART.

putt-putt 24-miler in the local metro san diego digs. making sure some tendinitis(-like) symptoms in the ankle that cropped up on monday after going hard following racer guy for 3.5 miles through carlsbad were totally gonzo. note to self...don't do that again on the oldest/heaviest bike. super mellow. low-80's. decent breeze. got pretty humid once east of the 805 freeway. looking to do pee vee (palos verdes peninsula) tomorrow to make up for some lost downtime this week.

26 mile re-entry ride in Irvine after another month off the bike. Thank you for the kudos, ooga-booga.
After 5 years of road biking, this was supposed to be the summer in which I (finally) learn how to ride clipless. Instead, consecutive foot injuries -- first, metatarsalgia on my left foot, and more recently, bruised heel and Achillis tendon on my right foot -- reduced my riding to only once each in July and August 2022. Still not 100%, but resuming riding seems to help with my back issues. Slow AF but still (barely) made it up Portola Parkway without stroking out.

35-miler on the palos verdes peninsula + san pedro. ride truncated somewhat with a riding buddy's cleat/pedal interface as a no-go and non-drive train side crank coming off. still, a nice day in pee vee.

More hill intervals in the Whittier Hills. Good sweaty workout with a cloudy start and ending in full sunshine.

Climbed Mt. Wilson to the observatory with part of our usual group on Sunday. Finished the ride with a breakfast burrito at Lupe's down the street from the start. It was a tough climb but the views were worth it

Saturday...MTB ride in Marshall Canyon with a couple of buddies I started riding and racing with in the '90s. We usually ride together on the road, but it was nice to share the dirt together. I managed to take a pretty hard slow-speed tumble and land on my shoulder. It was sore, but I was able to finish the ride with no issues, and there hasn't been any lingering significant issues. https://www.strava.com/activities/7710574787
Sunday...Altadena - Santa Fe Dam. I rolled out with the intent to keep the pace at a easy-moderate tempo all day, but a text message from the wife on the way back home ramped up the effort for the last 45 minutes. I felt surprisingly good. https://www.strava.com/activities/7716514998

I did about 28 miles on Saturday. Warmed up riding up Arroyo Blvd., then around the Rose Bowl, did interval laps at JPL, climbed the easy way through Chevy Chase Canyon and concluded the ride climbing Glenoaks Canyon to the dead end. After that ride, my family and I ate early dinner of all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ (I needed it, I was famished)! For those in the area, I highly recommend giving Glenoaks Canyon a try. It's a non-stop short climb that gets progressively steeper with no switchback breaks. Just doing 2 intervals there will kick your butt! The downhill is fun, but you have to watch your cornering and speed since there's a sports complex at the top so there's a few cars that go up and down, though I'd say it's much safer than riding up Griffith Observatory with the tourists traffic.

Yes same road! My daughter has soccer practice at the Glenoaks field this season, so some nights I've been trying to do interval climbs, but it's a real butt kicker. The downhill can get really sketchy as well, you can easily go 40mph plus, but some of the corners have poor visibility.

80-miler focusing on the coast/bay with a late (>10:30am) start and with it being a tad toasty inland. hadda hit the big gulp coke slurpee at mile 71 to get over the proverbial heat hump. beaches and mission bay relatively quiet but won't be repeating this route this holiday weekend with the insanity. east of the 5 freeway-sdsu area, 85-90 degrees. west of the 5 freeway, 84-85 degrees. hit 1,200 miles for the month which is a personal best but had to make up a lot of non-riding, lost time this year in july (950 miles) and august. always shoot for 6k miles but will be lucky to hit 5k.

Wednesday Night Ride from Velo Pasadena (24.5mi) - This flock tends to include a lot of the local go-fast guys and gals, and can be an absolute suffer-fest. Mercifully, the heat kept the pace tolerable and some of the strongest guys at home. Even so, I still got shelled and spit out the back before the first re-group point. This ride is still over my head, but it was good to get out and do it, and I'm not the only one in the group that struggles. https://www.strava.com/activities/7734444399
