In other news: I ran my first marathon yesterday in Houston. Knocked it out at a 10:09 pace for 4:26:07, I'm pretty damned proud of that. NOW, I finally get to resume my bike training. I'd heard folks say previously that running kills your ability on the bike and Id always dismissed it, but I understand now. It's all about time. If I wanted to go hard one day on the bike, I couldn't because I had to go out the following day and run umpteen miles. I'm excited for the race season, even if my base is going to be a little weak this year.
well done

heard you guys had to brave some atrocious conditions as well

Yay. Finally finished filing the USAC permits. Sort of did the BikeReg stuff (it's not live until Feb 1).

Had a semi-meeting with the Missus about changes for 2013 Series. From the racer's point of view, almost nothing. Behind the scenes... it's like a stud-out restoration. Well maybe not that crazy. How about just rebuilding the second floor of a two story house.

I start the new job on Monday. I think I'll ask my new boss if they have porn filters. Forgot to ask in the interview.

Yeah, I couldn't justify the Red ceramic BB and now just use the basic steel GXP. I actually think the GXP spins easier and lasts longer.

Incorrect. You have to maintain them.

i bought ceramic BBs for a while and they never lasted long.

Most ceramic bearings sold to the bicycle market are not very good quality, as far as ceramic bearings go. They're not actually better than good steel bearings. So to make them feel "faster", they're specd with looser fitting seals. Since seal drag is most of what you feel when rotating a new bearing, that makes them feel faster (and allows them to have tests showing some small wattage improvement). But those loose fitting seals also let in more water and dirt.

So yea, if you're willing and able to periodically pop the seals, wash out the old grease and replace it, and can get the seals to seat again, you can keep the ceramic bearings going as long as good steel bearings. If you're not, then steel bearings would be a better idea. I find the regular GXP BBs to be pretty good- they're free spinning and last a long time in poor conditions with no maintenance.

I put over 30k miles on a set of ceramic bearings with pretty much no issues. Just clean that crap out every now and then.

You have to remove the crank and very carefully pop the seals off the bearings. If you're not careful you will damage the seal lip or bend the seal. If you do that it will no longer seal.

Then you flush out the dirty old grease. A parts washer is best for that, but you'll have to remove the bearings or BB cups to use it. After drying the solvent, regrease the bearing. Then carefully reinstall the seal.

Ceramic bearings should only be owned by people with the brains to maintain them or the free cash to replace them when they get dirty.

The ceramic bearing improvement myth has been pretty well busted when applied to bicycles.

There are places where a ceramic bearing makes sense. Anywhere on a bike is not among them.
