This needs to be restated. It can be annoying when you buy something and then can't use it, and if you sell it, you take a loss. But these losses can be seen as rental fees. And they are completely worth it. You don't even lose much with expensive saddles. Resale value is pretty good, especially when you buy them used. You really need to try a lot of saddles, and I'm not sure how valuable it is to get reports of comfortable saddles from other people. Their comfort doesn't mean you'll have the same.

I've had good luck with Terry saddles, as have many other women riders. I have the Liberator; many of my friends have the Butterfly. As others have said, it would be ideal if you could find a place that takes a good sit-bone measurement and has a wide selection of saddles to try out.
Terry's website does sort saddles by type of riding, which meshes well with jma1st3r's advice.

Good luck -- I know how frustrating finding a good fit can be!
