Woah, a drug thread in the 50+ forum, usually it's just SSFG.
I'm not 50+, but I'll chime in anyway. I grew up mormon and never did any drugs. I might try pot, mushrooms or something similar now that I'm a little more open minded about that stuff. Acid, narcotics and others just seem to risky. No way do I want to face addiction or health problems due to drugs at this stage in my life. (30 with a wife and kids)
Generally speaking, two beers while I wrench on bikes is all the mind altering I want.

Even though I was in college in the 60s, I didn't do drugs. Reasons? I was afraid I'd get caught. I never wanted to feel like I was not in control of myself. I thought I was cooler by saying "no". Never even been drunk, but I do like the red wine. Today? 33 years as a probation officer (ret) and the reasons above still make a "no" for me.

I was always pretty cautious in what I chose. I did my research before trying.
The only reason I don't smoke pot now is that in moving to Arkansas I lost my connection. I love it.
LSD is wonderful, but so powerful that it must only be used very sparingly and with much forethought and preparation. Not a problem since I haven't even seen any since 1982. I knew Timothy Leary in the early 80's and even he couldn't seem to find any then. Bicycling on acid was cool because I seemed to have unlimited energy.
I tried peyote a couple of times. The best moment was pedaling up behind a gal in a Cadillac convertible only to hear her radio play the Led Zep lyrics "And she's buying a stairway to heaven." I thought that was cosmically ironic.
Alcohol, a terrible drug. It really makes people into *******s. If you listen to an alcohol party the volume levels are so high as everyone tries to shout over the others and all the laughter sounds so insincere. I will have an occasional beer in a social setting just because many people think there is something wrong with you if you won't have a beer. Wine? meh. I used to enjoy shots of hot Tequila with a cold Pepsi as chaser, but I've given up drinking Pepsi. You might guess, I don't get invited to many parties. Bicycling and alcohol don't mix at all.
Tobacco, my Mom did me a great favor as a teen at the age that cigarettes were supposed to be cool. She was coughing her lungs up from her own tobacco problem. That made me decide that cigarettes were not worth it after trying a few. I got turned off of cigars by a genuine Cuban cigar. For the first while it was was nice and I really understood why people enjoyed them. Moments later I was sick as a dog and wishing I could die.
In general, I have no trust of processed chemicals. Not a good idea.
Caffiene, well I might have some in tea on occasion, but having kicked a 45 year cola habit I understand what a powerful combination caffiene and sugar are. Coffee was never a problem, except that the smell of fresh brewed coffee literally makes me sick to my stomach.
Of all the drugs, Sugar is the strongest. Heck you'd die without it, but that also makes it the hardest to live without. Damne'd sweet tooth.
But Oxygen is the MUST HAVE drug! I never bicycle without it.

When I was young in the 60s and 70s I was so straight, I was odd. I didn't do any drugs except aspirin and never touched alcohol until I was of legal age. I remember going to beer parties in college and only going there to play chess.
That's not to say I don't drink now, I do. Not much though. I like a good wine. I will drink potent potables that I've never tried before. And I will drink a beer or two after a game of golf. But I don't drink and drive, except maybe on the course.
Caffeine in the form of Pepsi is my addication. I'm down to one can a day now though. I probably should stop drinking that stuff, but it just tastes so good....
I don't think I'll ever even try any illegal drugs, I need all the brain cells I can get.

Hi Tom:
Inverness, Fl. on the bike trail is really addictive. Did 60 miles every AM and another 40 on a tandem with my wife, or solo on the Madone. Very very nice. Thinking of going there again and again.
No need for drugs there. The huge amount of food intake (and wine) is a drug. I felt high all the time.

When I was in college, I barely had enough money for food. Drugs were for the wealthier kids. When I graduated, I got my first real job, bought a Corvette, hung out with a bunch of guys at the beach and spent every weekend meeting the ladies at the local watering holes. To be honest, we just never had time for drugs. We were too busy having a good time.
I love my wife and kids and my current life. But I'd be a liar if I said I didn't miss those great single days at the beach with the gang that I hung around with.

Been there, done that & that & that.
But that was then and this is now.
Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice Inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back.

These questions are much too deep for any of us here to comprehend. Let's see what the experts have to say.
