We might have to get a SoCal kid ride going one of these days...

Here's young TrojanHorse after we picked his up a month ago -

I have since swapped out the saddle and retaped the bars with some black / blue bartape. it looks pretty sharp now and slightly less girly. Note that monster clunky stem - it's adjustable. I've already adjusted while we were out riding too! You guys may want to look into something like that. He was bellyaching up a storm about his hands hurting until I raised the bars (a little higher than what you see here)

I like the idea of a family ride. Though cupcakes is wanting to do GMR! Uh...I think we may need a little more saddle time for her first!

And I may go with the adjustable stem. Not sure. As long as it's shorter. Thinking of going with a 50.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I caught Cupcakes waxing her new bike yesterday. Yes, car wax getting into all the nooks and crannies. The bike was pretty clean to start with, but she's just that excited. Oy. I've created a monster!

And when we do get a group ride together that she tags along for, the first person who even THINKS about planting any ideas of Zipp, Sidi, DI-ANYTHING, carbon fiber upgrades, etc is getting Cinzano'd.

I put deep carbons on that bike and a nearby sneeze would blow her off the road!

Hey PJ, you should put on of those Profile Designs Aqua Racks on her seat. She can lug around another couple of water bottles for you. Not to mention the added weight might slow her up enough so you can keep up.

Just a thought.

How tall is she?

One of my bikes is a 44cm bike with a 50cm top tube. I mentioned that I put a 50mm stem on it and it made a big, big difference in my ability to ride that bike. I am 4'10.5". An adjustable stem was too long. I found one off of eBay for a fairly reasonable price. I was thinking of going with a 40mm but I couldn't find anything that I liked. I also do not find the handling the least bit twitchy and the bike actually is less twitchy than my Madone, which is a smaller bike but with a longer stem.

Yup. Knee-high to a grasshopper. I ordered this today. Hoping it works. I'm sure it's a good first step.

Wow, that is cheap. The "usually ships in 2-3 weeks" scares me a little. I've had those ship in 2-3 days....and 2-3 months. Did you order it?

I don't have any kids of my own (and no regrets on that really ) but I do love seeing kids out and about on bikes, especially when riding with their families.

Specs on the bike. I think you can see why we need to do some tweaking for 4'7"!

Well, at that age you are limber!

I got this purple one for about $25 with shipping, as it matched the purple in my bike:

My posterior reminded me the entire ride what an idiot I am! Yes, but I'm a HAPPY idiot!

Halfway through the ride, I realized PSALM had suggested I flip it. Well, the bike is still a HAIR too big for her, and the stem was down, so I took PSALM's advice. We stopped in some shade and flipped the stem.....UP! It helped a lot. Still need a shorter stem, but I'll find that soon.

She was all smiles for the whole ride. Me, on the other hand, am questioning the wisdom of buying her a more efficient bike. I may have to lock out a few gears and tighten the brakes so they drag. Don't tell her, though!

Great bike and great story. The one bad thing I notice about kids when they ride is their helmets. For some reason they like to wear it up on their head rather than having it cover their forehead. I don't know if it means that the helmet doesn't fit or they just like it the way they wear it.
