First ride on a modern carbon bike today while in Hawaii. Just a 22 miler so I could get back and help my wife around the condo since she's limited to one arm right now. Muggy at 6:30 am and a lot of traffic. The bike (C'dale Super Six) is definitely stiffer on take off and stand up climbing. But, man can you feel the rough stuff. Seems like it all transfers through the bars and saddle. I'll shoot for a little longer ride tomorrow as long as the storm stays away. Had a wheel sucker for a few miles which was extremely irritating.

Well, let's see, on today's commute I saw no waterfront, no beach, no volcano, no arch bridges or stone monuments (that I noticed), and very little wildlife. But it was a nice ride anyway. I rode the Motobecane, the 41 year old blue streak of (as @Prowler described it) "Gallic goodness" with Vittoria sew-up tires and 2x5 gearing.

That Moto is a very fine bike. Even at Christmas temperatures, I really enjoyed flying on that bike. That ride was too short that day.

I had a great time, there was very little traffic and the weather was close to perfect. The Bighorns are one of my all time favorite places...this wasn't my first time riding there and I've also done some backpacking there as well.

We took the tandem out again today, 44 miles. Left the house at ~8:30, temperature eventually hit 90F with 50% humidity, ugh. We had fun though.

But I did go out on a nice 26 mile ride earlier today. 1 hr 37 min and an avg 16 mph speed. What a difference in handling with those new Kenda K35 tires on my old Fuji Del Rey, versus having those K161 knobby cyclocross tires on!

I've been riding in Forest Park lately. There are only a few trails where bikes are permitted, which is frustrating considering the park is 8 miles long and 5,100 acres of mostly trackless forest. But there is a 11 mile winding trail/access road, another trail that is a solid climb, and several steep single track "fire lanes" branching from those trails. And probably more, I've only recently been exploring this park by bike.

Lots of people ride this park on cross bikes. I saw a guy come up out of one fire lane on a cross bike, going fast, not red faced or wasted. Then I went down that fire lane on my mountain bike, and had to walk a couple spots because they were too steep, tight, and rooty for my rusty mountain bike skills. Oh well, sigh.

Today I rode 5 miles to the trailhead, about 15 miles on the trails, then 5 miles home. I've been trying out this thing where you ride a big gear at low cadence, standing when necessary, to build leg strength. Fun stuff. The bummer is that after airing down to 35 psi for the trails, the bike is incredibly slow on the paved road home.

That is, by the way, a C&V mountain bike.

A rare Double session yesterday, with a morning ride at Allaire State Park on the Krampus and the afternoon with family and friends at Island Beach State Park, brought the old stumpy and explored the marshland and scrub pines.

Lots of riding through woods going on lately, jyl, CM.

I rode a rare solo session today, all on roads, no woods or beaches. I took the Masi, started at 8:30AM, rode straight west to I-495, finished with 59.2 miles.



Found a bit of history no one ever sees when zipping by in a car.





Doubled back a ways, turned north and found some absolutively beeaauutiful roads running from nowhere to nowhere under a thick canopy of trees. Didn't dare take any pics for fear of breaking the spell. Had nice munchie break in Boxborough, classic New England, the town hall built in 1901. Sitting on those steps I ate a slightly melted frozen fruit thingy my sweetie concocted for me. Saw half a dozen bikes go by. I wonder what their route was, never got a chance to catch them and ask.





A small WWI memorial in front of the Town Hall. Hard to believe WWI started over 100 years ago. We have invented a lot of things since then but have we learned much in the last 100 years?



Spent the middle third of the ride stopping at every intersection to check the GPS so I wouldn't get lost. Try going east from Boxborough. I was trying to avoid the Withywindle but all trails led down to the Withywindle. "You can't get theah from heah." Really. I finally found a reasonable route through Acton to West Concord. I don't recommend rt111 west of Acton though, too narrow, no shoulder.

Crossed the Assabet River, stopped for more munchies. The banana I was carrying had turned to banana soup in the shell.



It was a great 59.2 miles.

I rode out to Easthampton yesterday. They have windmills there:



Not that I went for the windmills. I'm much more interested in the fauna, not including the crazy drivers, one of whom nearly killed me. Oy.

93F, 50+% RH, I was just about good for 20 miles and 800 feet of attitude, I mean altitude adjustment. I arrived home soaking, sopping wet. Even my usual raspberry beer didn't do it for me.

A sad story, that. Seeing things like this, and following the story (the recent story) one begins to wonder about humans. Of course the original story, that of Sarah and Peter escaping from Salem during the witch trials makes one wonder even more about humanity...

JJS, very nice! Just curious, when you crossed the Westport did you climb up the west bank on Hixbridge Road? That's a killer hill!

I didn't cross the Westport River Jim; I rode along the edge of the west branch. I didn't want to go to close to Horseneck beach because of traffic. It's kind of flat compared to where I usually ride, but it is really pretty.
@Vonruden- What is the saddlebag on your Weigle? I really like it!

I've been riding, but just the same old local stuff I've posted before. I got out after dinner for a ride and beer before dusk. The sun set at 8:18 tonight.. Getting to be shorter days.
