Rarely, you can get scar tissue in the heart but I believe this is really for ultra-distance activities. I see nothing wrong with 4 hours on the bike. Or even more. One of my former cycling friends was a commercial pilot and rode/rides lots and was not told to limit his riding.

The one guy I've been in contact with is feeling the effects, but his girlfriend(who he was visiting) has tested negative, and will be retested tomorrow.

Yeah you would know more than me on it, but the cases I've heard about that are people doing the truly stupid events like Leadville or Western States. It's not something I've heard of hitting any marathoners or Ironman sorts, even those who do a couple per year for years on end.
This is good to know. Figured I would ask here, it didn’t seem right to me, but I wasn’t going to argue with him. He must not be a fan of marathoners either.

Oh, and another question for the experts: Do you sleeve your cables with liner tubing where they pass through the cable guide under the BB? My bike started out with them sleeved, but the one on the rear cable migrated back into the chain stay. There was no visible damage to the guide.

Went to the doctor today for a quick blood pressure check. Blood pressure is fine, faa requires it. Anyways, while I was there I mentioned my hand (it has gotten better), and he was shocked that I was on the bike for four hours. He actually showed concern, and said the max cardio activity I should be doing is 60 mins max three times a week. He said that hours of cardio has been proven to cause heart problems in Endurance athletes. I don’t plan on stopping what I am doing anytime soon, Thoughts anyone?
As a 64 year-old physician who fits the profile, I worry a hell of a lot more about being mooshed by a negligent driver.
BTW, you will need to protect that ulnar nerve or find a position on the bike which doesn’t traumatize it. You are likely hitting it on the pinky side of the base of your palm. Nerves recover, but don’t like repeated damage.

I'm not sure but I think the overtraining heart issues are more cyclists than any other sports. I don't think others put in the hours for years on end like cyclists do, although I knew a guy who ran (fast) 135 miles per week. Still, he got shin splints and switched to cycling where he had that huge engine but no skills.

As a 66 year old lifetime slacker I also worry about motorists but I also worry about having to quit doing hard rides due to some heart problem.
I had some a-fib issue while I was still working but it resolved itself in between doctor visits and fighting with insurance.
Before corona I was up to 13 or more hours per week on the bike with a good part of that at high intensity.

I think we are more likely to develop heart problems from not training than over training. No one here rides that much, not even LAJ.
Don't ever forget, we are all to fat for this stupid sport.

To summarize:
Exercise is bad for your heart and so is not exercising.

This actually almost stopped me from running my first marathon. My PCP at the time told me how otherwise healthy people could drop dead and recommended I reconsider.
