I developed my road riding chops in Los Angeles, 1970. Now in north central FL. A lot of close calls over the years, but no actual collisions. I don't notice any difference - some dangerous drivers AND cyclists everywhere, but mostly courteous people of both persuasions. However, there must be something to Florida's reputation:

This is the 3rd year out of the past 4 years that I've wintered in Mt. Dora FL - around an hour north of Orlando. I love it - get to see Osprey, eagles, sand hill cranes, herons, ibis, on most rides. Very rural, with easy rolling hills. Also within an hour of 3 great paved trails ranging from over 50 miles to 92 miles round trip. It's a large state, so don't be too quick to criticize.

Rural - Absolutely. It's in Lake County, hence all the waterfowl and raptors. Tons of citrus groves and a few cattle farms.

South Florida, from West Palm Beach down to Miami, ranks right up there with Chernobyl and Syria in terms of cycling.
Nobody walks anywhere, ever. People drive to cross the street. It is a car-centric place and jam packed like New Jersey at rush hour. The first thing people do when they get in their car is dial the phone.

I love Florida for riding. Endless miles of nearly car free country roads winding through the trees. I can do a century without hitting a traffic light. Just depends on where in the state you're riding.

Nope. I don't ride in the white stuff. Being from SoCal originally, I hate the cold. I hate it more now than when I moved here in 2006. I tinker with the bikes and ride a stationary bike until it clears up outside. It sucks. Southern Utah is in my future.

I'd say it's worth it if you're visiting and looking for something to do. A ride up the beach on A1A is a nice way to spend a few hours, and the weather right now is perfect. Do a late-morning ride (i.e., post-rush hour) during the week if you can. Less traffic.

I live in North Central Florida and think we have some pretty decent cycling. A lot of the railways have been converted to paved trails via the Rails to Trails program, so there is a decent amount of traffic-less riding areas where you can get in some decent rides. The weather can be a bit hot sometimes, but at least we don't have to deal with ice and snow. lol

That's pretty much spot on for New Jersey. I used to watch a co-worker drive across the street every day to go to work. Not even enough time for the car to warm up. Georgia seems car-centric at times too (they're always adding more lanes for cars!) and at first glance there's no place for cyclists on the roads. Difference is, a lot of people really slow down for cyclists, and some won't even pass you. In NJ, they yell at you and try to startle you.

I remember one ride where you kept waving motorists through. At first I thought you were telling me to come up and take a pull, then I realized you were signaling cars to pass.
Georgia motorists are very confused. Few would last five minutes in Chicago or Boston or NY or Philly. The people who design roads down here don't help.
The pavement is pretty silky though, and the daffodils will be up in a few weeks.
