I developed my road riding chops in Los Angeles, 1970. Now in north central FL. A lot of close calls over the years, but no actual collisions. I don't notice any difference - some dangerous drivers AND cyclists everywhere, but mostly courteous people of both persuasions. However, there must be something to Florida's reputation:

Yeah, North Florida is practically a different country from South Florida. Hills? Rural roads?

Hills - Some short ones can be found. Thrill Hill is an 11-14% grade depending on which direction you approach it. And entering Mt. Dora is 6-7%. Mostly flat to gently rolling.
Rural - Absolutely. It's in Lake County, hence all the waterfowl and raptors. Tons of citrus groves and a few cattle farms.

Northern Idaho

+ Bike lanes everywhere
+ Big network of well groomed bike trails
+ Wide meandering sidewalks
+ Stop signs don't apply to bikes
+ Red lights don't apply to bikes
+ Legal to use sidewalk if necessary
+ Scenery and wildlife
+ Perfect Summer weather

- LONG BRUTAL winter

Wait. We were listing places that are amazing for cycling but also have natural weather patterns?

It's too easy to list horrible places.

South Florida, from West Palm Beach down to Miami, ranks right up there with Chernobyl and Syria in terms of cycling.

Nobody walks anywhere, ever. People drive to cross the street. It is a car-centric place and jam packed like New Jersey at rush hour. The first thing people do when they get in their car is dial the phone.

Etc.

Sounds great and I love cold weather. Although driving through Idaho it looked bland compared to Oregon. Still would prefer it over Florida.

I love Florida for riding. Endless miles of nearly car free country roads winding through the trees. I can do a century without hitting a traffic light. Just depends on where in the state you're riding.

Gotta hit Northern Idaho. The Panhandle area. Pretty much the opposite of central and southern.

Nope. I don't ride in the white stuff. Being from SoCal originally, I hate the cold. I hate it more now than when I moved here in 2006. I tinker with the bikes and ride a stationary bike until it clears up outside. It sucks. Southern Utah is in my future.

Visiting southern FL next week. Was planning on maybe renting a bike and riding. This thread has made me reconsider.

I'd say it's worth it if you're visiting and looking for something to do. A ride up the beach on A1A is a nice way to spend a few hours, and the weather right now is perfect. Do a late-morning ride (i.e., post-rush hour) during the week if you can. Less traffic.

I live in North Central Florida and think we have some pretty decent cycling. A lot of the railways have been converted to paved trails via the Rails to Trails program, so there is a decent amount of traffic-less riding areas where you can get in some decent rides. The weather can be a bit hot sometimes, but at least we don't have to deal with ice and snow. lol

I rode today and didn't even get shot at or run over once.

I did see a bird get hit by a car, though. Do you think there's a thread like this on birdforums.net?

I've had experience riding in florida and I agree 100% that it's the worst place for cycling.

Tim,

That's pretty much spot on for New Jersey. I used to watch a co-worker drive across the street every day to go to work. Not even enough time for the car to warm up. Georgia seems car-centric at times too (they're always adding more lanes for cars!) and at first glance there's no place for cyclists on the roads. Difference is, a lot of people really slow down for cyclists, and some won't even pass you. In NJ, they yell at you and try to startle you.

I remember one ride where you kept waving motorists through. At first I thought you were telling me to come up and take a pull, then I realized you were signaling cars to pass.

Georgia motorists are very confused. Few would last five minutes in Chicago or Boston or NY or Philly. The people who design roads down here don't help.

The pavement is pretty silky though, and the daffodils will be up in a few weeks.

I'll take confused over agressive lol. There are some aggressive drivers but most drivers seem pretty cool. Haven't had a flat down here yet, despite riding mostly road. Definitely looking forward to the spring! Going to scout out some new rides too. Have you tried the Noonday Creek trail in Kennesaw?
