Yep, I've been in the same position many times... Finally found something in an inoffensive color (to her aesthetic,) after passing on several that were technically superior, but the wrong color.

Bike has so far stripped down OK. Little bit of trouble with the right crank - threads were a bit messed up and while I got it off I probably haven't improved it any. Haven't tackled the BB or the freehub yet. Got the tools in my el-cheapo kit, but haven't taken off a freehub style gear cluster before, only modern cassettes.
Wheels might need to be completely disassembled. The spokes look great, but the hubs will need a lot of cleaning that I won't be able to do with the spokes in the way.
This bike is mostly going to cost me a lot of time. Parts not so much: needed will be tyres/tubes, cable housing (have some cables off another bike), bar tape and brake pads. The seat post is pretty damn short, so I'll need to scrounge a longer one if I am to ride this baby (In theory it is one size too small, but a longer seat post and maybe a 120mm stem will make it fine - perhaps wider bars if there are any around) so hopefully the guy at my LBS has some 'junk' in his back room.

Not bikes but still interesting and a great price to boot!
Girvin flexstem in neon yellow, 1-1/8":
Matching neon yellow Answer Accu-trax fork:
And a nice machined alum threadless stem - the fox decal is probably not original:

Couple of 83 Nishikis I picked up. All complete, and although not valuable, they are nice looking bikes. One is an Olympic 12 and the other a Sport. ,

Picked up an old Nishki Rally out of a garbage pile the other day, havn't searched it for the serial number or taken pictures. If I have a chance, I'll get on it today.
It's spring cleaning here, where once a year the town will drag whatever you park on the curb to the dump for free. You'd be amazed at how many old supercycle walmart junk frames are out there. If you keep a keen eye, you can pick up some amazing finds.

Bought 3 bikes at Goodwill yesterday. Only one was really worth anything. Here is its transformation.
By the way... I got all three bikes (2 Huffys and this Ross) for $12.99

OK, not a bike, and a pretty questionable buy as well. But it was senior day at the thrift stores today, so I picked up this old IMac G3 "slot". It had all of the documentation and start-up disks, keyboard and mouse, and it works. Seems like the only way I would ever own an Apple computer (they are great, but they cost too much).
We'll see what I end up doing with it.... At least it was cheap. I may boost the RAM to 1GB just for the heck of it.

wrk101, if you want my Mac story, email me. I bought the model even older than that one.
I've come to believe that you get what you pay for with a Mac. Yes, they're frightfully expensive, and it's worth it in the long run.

Wow! - your Goodwill store looks like a bike shop !
- I think I would have picked up a couple of those De Rosas' instead of the Huffys.

That one. I don't let it soak long. Maybe 10 minutes. It cleans stuff up quickly. Gotta get some gloves though, cuz it BURNS!

I so often pick up basket cases, but when I saw this Dawes Atlantis, I bought it thinking it was cherry.
Then, a week or two ago, just as I was finally starting give it a good cleaning and overhaul, I found the right pedal was stuck: Cross threaded SO badly, that I had to CUT it out of the crank. Still, the alloy was so galled up in the pedal threads that I had to buy a new 9/16” die at the local production tool supply to chase it, AND of course, buy a new crank.
Today I took it out for it’s inaugural ride and it skipped once or twice when I was sprinting up a hill -so now it’s a new freewheel and chain. Arrg!
Is it me? - or does everyone have these little catastrophes every time they get a new bike?
Anyway, it’s an ’82 Atlantis, Reynolds 531 dbl butted frame and forks, Suntour Cyclone and a (replacement) Shimano Ultegra tricolor crank.
