Best cycling gloves for 40 degrees?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CASTELLI ESTREMO GLOVES

Those seem promising but pricey at $90

I also tried the Pearl Izumi Thermal Lites and they don't seem too warm and are 99% polyester so will probably return them.

Any other recommendations?
These are too hot. It's what I wear sub 20F and down to subzero (with pogies). 40F is not that cold but your hands can get really cold from windchill, not temperature. Castelli gets that and has done a better job of sealing seams against cold air penetration than most other glove manufacturers.

A perfect glove for what you want is the Castelli Spettacolo. Gore windstopper and a fleece lining. Breathes well and has a wide range. Very trim - not bulky. Great feel on the bars and easy to work shifters or your phone.

Cannondale's Three Season Glove-mitten, its got a roll back/tuck away wind mitten cover that goes over the full fingered glove, not to warm and can be worn as a light regular cool weather glove as well. Black only, mine are starting their 3rd year of use and still look great.
