To be fair though, those long scoreless games can be ended with excellent shootouts in which each team gets to stand right in front of the giant goal and see who can blast more shots past a goalie with a 50% chance of lunging the wrong way.

No, I’m talking about the one on 168 st near Columbia Presbyterian Hosp. My school was on 152 st and Amsterdam.

Maybe just use those and dispense with the 90 minute snooze-fest.

Let’s remember the origins of American football. It was invented as a way to toughen up college boys who weren’t lucky enough to come of age (edit: "fighting age") while the US was fighting in a war.

America didn’t want to raise no sissy boys.

So many American values represented in the game, mostly toxic ones.

Agreed.

I'm an NBA guy myself. More scoring and non-stop action than the NFL with none of the brain damage.

The first football game was played by college boys who absolutely came of age while the US was fighting a war.

Basketball is all offense no defense, soccer is all defense no offense. Men's vs women's basketball are different games, though. Yesterday afternoon I had the opportunity to watch either NBA or women's college basketball. The college game was watchable.

The reported first college game was in 1869. I don't think there was a US war then.

Forgot about that. That sort of thing is one reason REI changed its refund policy. People would buy gear for a one-time trip and then return it. One nickname was Rental Equipment, Inc.

Those college players obviously "came of age" during the late unpleasantness.

Didn't see any logos on their uniforms, so I didn't know who it was.

HBCU marching bands can whup up on any "Pride of the XXX" bands.

I was thinking "came of age" means "fighting age". As in "old enough to fight in a war". Roughly college age.

The upshot was that there was this sudden influx of college kids who were "soft", because they hadn't fought.

I've never been a big football guy, but this is the first year in a while where the Super Bowl is the only complete game I watched. Within the framework of what American Football is, it was a really good game, IMO.

Rarely happens if you support Man City. Of course nobody likes to see a scoreless draw, but they are actually quite uncommon.

I'm guessing that the 1.5 billion people who watch the World Cup final (about 12x as many as watch the Super Bowl) are all just dopes, in your opinion. The sort of rubes who prefer disc brakes and cf frames.

...I read some article or another headline, that referred to one of the SF linemen rupturing his Achilles tendon on the sidelines, possibly while warming up. Speculation was that he was so distracted by Taylor Swift and her A list friends, that he tore it while stretching, turning in a moment of inattention. I did not watch the game, I did not watch the commercials, and I did not see the halftime show. I have been to Vegas a couple of times, though.
