Tom, I have no idea what I'd do but its a 68 or 69 and I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) those are full 531, not just main tubes like my '72. Also for the price its got a Stronglight 49D crankset (or something that looks like one), a cool Huret RD and those Shimano 600 hubs. And its green, which is always extra points for me.

Oh, it is certainly a good value. I didn't know about that period being full 531.

I hope you know that Shimano 600 didn't come out until much, much later. And I hope I didn't insult you by saying so.

Not as far as I know. It wasn't until the late 70s that the Super Course went full DB 531.

Oh yeah I realize those aren't original wheels, I just liked the prospect of some 600 hubs...matter of fact I like it so much I may troll ebay for some better-than-Normandy hubs for my sc.

I've really been hot to trot for Sturmey cassette/Drum Brake hub lately...

My father has an '84 or '85 Super Course and it's freakin' beautiful. He did however manage to ruin the left crank arm hole so it doesn't stay on anymore. It was a Raleigh branded crank, but anyone have any idea what brand was OE? I'd like to track down a set for him.

Folks - what have you done? For the last couple months I've been trying to talk myself into getting rid of one of my sc's thinking that it is a little extravagant to have two, that after all it wasn't a top end bike, yaddy yadda. Then I spend some time perusing this (superb) thread and now I find myself not only dreaming about how I can set up each of the two differently (thus justifying keeping them), but also about how much I like those green MKII's and that if one pops up on CL ...

Truth is it makes me all warm inside to know there are this many beautiful old 70's Raleigh road bikes gracing the world's roads and byways. The world is a better place with them around.

In a private email conversation with Zaphod, I mentioned that my 1971 Super Course is my "testbed" bike. I make changes to it more frequently than to my other bikes. He asked to see it.

I have a lot of pictures in my flickr set for this bike. Today's pictures start here.

Recent changes include

- this wacky handlebar which I'm surprised to find I love.
- rear tire is a Cheng Shin. Not as nice as a Pasela, but not bad. Front is still Pasela.
- crank is an old Sugino, 42/52, to replace the crappy Dotek triple 28/37/48.
- freewheel is now Shimano 600 13-32, replacing a Shimano 13-24.
- I don't have any super low gears, and I use this for hauling in hilly terrain, but I manage to get by that way with no complaints.
- Shimano chain. Woohoo!

As you will note, this bike is an absolute eyesore. I don't pay any attention to the æsthetics. A friend crashed this bike a year ago and broke the front fender, so I fixed it with a cut-up milk jug and Gorilla Tape. Extra ugly.

Oh, note the Jim Blackburn rack. I bought it in about 1979.

Suntour BL rear derailleur?

Yes, I've had the BL derailleur on it most of the time I've been riding it. It came with a Huret Luxe derailleur, made of 100% steel. I'd use it except it doesn't give enough travel for a 6-speed freewheel. I had the Campy Gran Turismo on it for a while, just for novelty's sake, but the fun on that wore out.

I used to have a BL front derailleur, but I swapped that onto a flipper (isn't that a weird turn of phrase?) and this is a lower line Suntour. It works great with the new-old Sugino chainrings and Shimano chain.

Its funny...looking at the whole bike at once it looks like some frankenbike but when you look up close at the details you can tell it was put together thoughtfully and most of all, done properly.
