Yep one of my favorite trails was closed for part of the year because of high water. Even when it became passable, the water was very high for much of this summer.

Excellent summary in just a few words - yup, we get those trails because the land isn't good for anything else. For decades, I used to "4 wheel" (trucks) in several of the river bottoms around here - and no one cared (in fact, the local business's polluted the land with no regard) until the DNR decided to get involved. OK, I got off track here... I have some pics of the flooding - I've passed the 10 post requirement, so lets see...

That's right there in Water Works Park (Des Moines)
I come south down Bill Riley, then right at the T, and the runs us right next to the river in WW. From there, I get to the Great Western trail, then down to Cummings.
The park is pretty nice, with several trail connections.
