You don't need fancy tools. An old leather toe strap is all you need....and strong fingers. Gatorskins and any Challenge "Open Tubular" tire is arguably the most difficult tire to mount initially. No problem.

Start working the tire on the rim and when it gets difficult, attach the toe strap on one side and tighten the tire and tube down. Now work the bead into the rim from the other side.. Leave mounted on the rim over night and then inflate slowly checking the bead and tube.

What the toe strap does is hold the tire and bead in position while you work the rest of the bead onto the rim. This is better than ANY other tool because you don't risk putting a mount crease/hole in the tube causing a flat.

This is the old-school tried and true shop method used for the last 100 years.

I should have reached for the tool that was in the drawer! I, too am a musician/teacher and also a tennis pro who has to care for his hands at all costs. I was unable to do either for a few days after wrestling with my tires...NO MORE!

Just an FYI, I've been changing bike tires and messing w/bikes since childhood...
