This is my new commuter, a 2009 Surly LHT. Been riding it about two weeks. Just installed fenders and rack. Decked out for commuting, though I still need to upgrade front light, maybe put on a mirror and get some pedals I can also use with work shoes when needed. Will upgrade rack when I'm ready for loaded touring. This replaces the Nishiki International I bought in 1984. The ride is quite an improvement, to say the least.

Here's my Vivian outfitted for the damp fall commutes. I normally use wald folding baskets but put these panniers on when it's wet out. I just put them over the baskets (folded). Yep, it's heavy, but I only commute about 2 1/2 miles each way so the heavier my load, the less I have to work out after I get home.
I also use these for grocery runs since they're massive!

Bikes: At one point it was a Trek 700 something. Now it have Velocity Psycho wheels, a tape job. Thumb shifters (Shimano Deore). Corncob grouping, and drop bar ends all wrapped up in tape.

Nice ride. that bike is exactly what I am looking for. flat bars, steel frame, no front derailer. it has a classic/clean look to it. Nobody sells bikes like this new it seems and i dont understand why. you can get a single speed but you cant get one with gears in back.

Riding like its 1990
so here's the current status after coming home from work today.
The road bike I have just wasn't made for it, so I've road-ified my Hardrock.
Changes: Race-lite front wheel, Mavic rear rim I just laced to an LX hub with a road 12-23 8 speed. Lights, rack, road pedals, flatbar with barends, 26x1.25 slicks
Starting to keep an eye out for a lighter front fork with lockout.
A simple wheel swap and rack removal gets me to dirt trails for weekend MTB fun.

I had the small 12 tooth before but the gearing jumps were 2 to three tooth jumps, now I have one tooth jumps in my main riding range, much nicer to snip along in the "right gear" all the time. I'd like to get a larger big ring in the front as on the road I'm always on it. In the dirt I'll be in the middle/small anyhow so I think that'd give me the best for both worlds.
Plus I had it laying around after changing the road bikes to 9 speed.

I think the change from knobbies to slick tires is the best improvement you can do to roadify a bike. I've done it for novice riders, and even they rave with appreciation!
