He'd have to totally reinvent himself, and lose some upper body mass.
Sagan can out climb virtually anybody that can sprint with him, but he can't begin to do HC climbs with the GC guys.
And why would he want to, when he already makes $6,000,000 a year, wins World Championships, Classics, the Green jersey and TDF stages.
He has the potential to go down as one of the great classics, one day, racers.
To try and win the TDF, he'd be effectively giving up winning the Classics.
And cycling doesn't start and end at the TDF, for the rest of the world.
If I were Sagan, my goals would be to 1) win Worlds as many times as possible ( he could conceivably get to 4-5) 2) Win all the monuments, 3) Win 15-20 TDF stages, 4) Win the Green Jersey most times in history ( he only needs one more to tie Zabel)
Doing all that would be pretty awesome, and the road to do doing isn't consistent with competing for GC at the TDF

But, I'm not sure that I agree that he would have to "completely reinvent" himself. There were a few instances in last year's Tour, on mountain stages, where he (as expected) fell out the back on a climb, only to suddenly reappear to contest mid-stage sprint points.
That's why I think he could. Doesn't mean I think he should. But I like that the potential seems to be there, you know?

I love the TDF scene where Pantani and Lance leave him behind on a stage. Then later he comes back, passes Pantani then leaves Lance behind.

I liked Robbie McEwen, little guy who could sprint like the wind, and wasn't afraid of a little argy-bargy. Also Thor Hushovd, wasn't afraid of a long solo break, could sprint with the best, and is probably the most macho cyclist ever to live. Going back further, Tom Steels was a favorite, who doesn't love a guy who was pretty much insane. Back when I started watching, I loved Djamolidine Abdoujaparov...the guy who was Cav before Cav, plus, what a name!
Nowadays, I'm way too jaded to be a fan of a particular rider, I see every performance for what it is, especially these alien mode breakaways and motor-like climbing.

Sagan. He had composure during his crash. If I was him, I would have grabbed the jacket that caused my injury, grabbed that fan and pull him over the fence... I would be so furious if I had a chance to win, and said fan's selfishness and thoughtlessness not only caused injury but an opportunity at podium? I'm be so furious.
Sagan instead said it was his fault, when it was clearly the fan's fault. I hope UCI well compensates him for being a good champion.

Actually it was Sagan's fault, as he admitted. The jacket, while not the best place, was literally draped over the barrier. Probably sticking out a few inches if that. Sagan chose to ride in the gutter to find the fastest, smoothest part of the course, but things like that can happen when you are inches away from the barriers. The fans themselves hang over the barriers to take pictures and raise their arms to cheer and such, sticking out much further than a jacket.
Just don't find much sympathy for this incident. There are numerous instances of idiotic fan incidents, but this was not one of them. I think Sagan would have made a bigger deal out of it had it been a legitimate complaint (like if some fan was running along side and wasn't paying attention and got hit, etc.)
Anyway, we're getting off topic, so we'll just have to disagree!

Sagan said it was his fault because he was being a good face of cycling and representing UCI and his team. Video footage clearly shows it is fan's fault.
This is why Sagan is great. I imagine if it was any baseball, football or basketball pro, they would have knocked that fan out cold.

Hard to pic just one.....Armstrong, ok he admits that he treated others in the business very poorly, seems to be sorry, either way, I got into cycling while it was at the heights of American popularity so it was a magical time for me. Have to include Sagan and Lemond, David Phinney, and I also admired Steve Bauer's riding prowess.

Hmmm, I'd have to say it's the local guy I keep chasing sporadically on my evening rides. I can run 23-25 mph over short rolling hills for several miles and whoever he is he keeps pulling farther and farther away.
One day!
Or I could keep is simple and say Greg LeMond.
I mean I do enjoy watching a lot of them ride now days but well,...if they going to be my favorite I need to at least believe they're clean and honest. I just can't get there anymore with today's cycling culture.
