Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I did another Crit on Zwift last night - what with one thing and another, I missed the window to ride outside - and this time I won it fair and square. Okay, so it was the D's, and there were only 8 other starters. But still! I don't find that racing on Zwift makes me want to race IRL. There's zero bikehandling skill required on Zwift, whereas REAL crits often result in mayhem. There's a Youtube channel, NorCal Cycling. He posts race footage of races he's ridden - and often won - with a lot of really good commentary on tactics etc. And it includes crashes. It makes me really not want to be around other riders going 30 mph+ while muscling their bikes all over the road, or riding in a pack where everyone is trying to take the same line through a curve.

Pfftt. Everything goes my way or they have to adjust.

But I get your point. It ultimately boils down to how much the positive, fun factor outweighs the negative factors of teamwork. For example, I don't mind the coach yelling at me, but another teammate has to make his point considerably more tactfully.

Which is the allure of real crits.

I have an IG but haven't looked at it in quite some time.

Twitter almost always has good stuff.

Best stuff today has been the bridge video, Representative Clyde memes, and McDonald's Germany's Big Spargel Hollandaise!

You know how people will use a particular word incorrectly long enough and eventually the English Language just says "well eff it I guess that's what it means now" (example: irregardless now being in the Oxford Dictionary)?

I usually don't get worked up about that sort of thing even though my undergrad degree was in English and I write for a living. This is because (a) languages evolve; (b) language "rules" are arbitrary; (c) the English language is really 3 languages standing on each other's shoulders and wearing a trench coat trying to pretend to be one language; and (d) ugh who cares, what a stupid thing to get worked about.

HOWEVER

It drives me crazy every time I see someone refer to the tire width as 28c instead of 28mm. There is no such thing as 28c (or 32 or 38 or whatever the width is.) "c" is not a unit of measurement. It's an archaic French standard that is supposed to indicate in a general way a class of tire widths. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#french

But you see it all the time, even in so-called professional cycling media and in ad copy from manufacturers themselves. It's such an easy thing to get right and yet no one bothers.

Like I said common mis-usage eventually becomes the correct usage and this is not a hill upon which I wish to die. But it still privately drives me crazy.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Yeah, except “leverage,” “parameter,” “outrage,” and the like, which used to mean real things and are now so much mush (pronounced moosh).
