Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Interesting seeing people return to work in town. More and more of the same bikes locked outside my building. More people out picking up lunch. More people in and out of the building and using the elevators.

But the real tell-tale sign appeared on Monday when I entered the restroom to discover someone had recently funked it up.

A new project has been hatched...Converting my old 7-speed Trek 9900 MTB to single speed. A very different approach to cycling than my usual diet of go-fast roadie stuff. I am excited for the change of scenery.

I'm not sure where I'd use a single speed bike. Too many hills here.

That's an issue in my area, too, so finding the right gearing to make it usable is going to be part of the challenge. There are some areas with shorter climbs that should be do-able. The long climbs that dominate the MTB'ing my area are probably out of the question. With modern MTBs being pretty hefty these day, I think it will be fun to throw around a 22 lb. single speed from time to time.

That's sexy as hell!! I'm admittedly out of touch with most modern MTB trends, but recent poking around on websites, I'm seeing a lot of bikes in the 28+ range.
