I don't like dislike buttons or other "karma" features. However, when I was a forum admin we did notice who were the top people on ignore lists and sometimes sent a message telling them that they were frequently on ignore lists and gave some suggestions on changes they should make to their posting style, if appropriate.

I'm part of another forum that has "like", "dislike", and "ELITE" buttons. It's cool because you don't have to reply to give a little feedback.

I have to say, I couldn't disagree more. I actively dislike "like" and "dislike" buttons. Maybe it comes from posting on other forums, but they just seem to add another layer of cliquishness, and even occasional venom, to these conversations. We're already faceless enough. If you have an opinion you want to share, the least you can do is write a sentence or two about it. Pamestique - those notifications are easy to disable in your settings, which is the first thing I did when the site came back up.

I agree that happens with dislike features but I haven't seen it happen with a "like" or "thanks" option.

Curious that the forum is not using the built-in thread rating feature........

What is so hard about typing a few words?

I think the 10% rule still applies...... 10% of reads produces a response.

A "like" button might be okay, but no "dislike". Allow me to give a few examples why.

On YouTube, that damn thumbs-down button is widely abused by trolls. It is always anonymous, which fuels the abuse. You can choose to share your likes, but not dislikes. IMHO, it is not a proper tool for constructive criticism. As someone who has been on YouTube since 2007, I found out the hard way that the vast majority of people will not leave a comment after giving your video a poor rating. If they do, it is often a very poorly written, trolling comment that doesn't help me improve my videos one bit.

After I'd had enough of the hit-and-run dislike button BS, I went back and disabled ratings on all my videos. I also disabled comment ratings. I set my YouTube defaults to have those "features" automatically disabled for each new upload.

Vimeo does not have a dislike button, only a like button. Guess what? They also don't have the troll problems that YouTube has. YouTube is a bastion of stupidity, thanks to unmoderated vicious comments and that damn dislike button.

The MTBR forum has a reputation feature. Until early this year, all reputation was anonymous. This allowed the trolls to have a field day. Here's an example of the typical troll neg rep. It was a thread about motorcycles, and the OP wanted to know how many mountain bikers also rode motorcycles. I mentioned the Kawasaki KE175 enduro that I owned for a few months back in 1988 (I promptly sold that bike and bought more of the pedal-powered kind after noticing rapid weight gain). My post had absolutely nothing to do with riding a bicycle uphill, yet I got this gem:

After a ton of complaints from many posters about abuse of the anonymous negative rep feature, all rep was auto-signed. Now when you leave reputation for someone, that person knows it was you.

I will only give positive reputation on posts, and "Like" on videos. If I don't like a video, I hit stop and move on. It's the right thing to do. Somebody still took time out of their day and put forth the effort to make a video for the public, so I will not insult their work with that stupid dislike button.

If Facebook ever gets a dislike button, I will delete my account.

That it is! I watch a ton of guitar instructional video so guys going note by note to teach songs, some add tabs via text and demonstrate how to play each part piece by piece. Man,these instructional guys are torn to bits by posters that have absolutely nothing or very little stupid stuff in their profiles. C'mon, if you're going to shred a guitar dude to piece, then make a video and show us how it's done. These guitar dudes do a lot to make those videos and are very helpful.

I think the guitar world is much more troll filled than the cycling world.

It's actually pretty nice if you use it wisely. My daughter and grand kids live in AZ but it's like they are local because of all the postings and pictures on FB. Plus all my friends on FB (qty 59) are all family member with the exception of 4 that are friends. This keeps it sane and friendly. I have a few cousins that are wisenheimers but they know they got to face the music sooner or later at family functions.

Well you all when I suggested a dislike button
I didn't think about all the knuckleheads
I meant for use as constructive criticism
Sorry I retract that part of my previous post

I agree with TJ. FB is the bane of my existence (and apparently of happy marriages too, from what I hear from the local phd / shrink crowd...). Lol! But I don't care enough about like buttons to have an opinion. I read posts from those that I find entertaining (yes, Beanz, PJ, TH, etc), and will admit to reading posts for photo quality (from one who shall remain unmentioned but that apparently lives in PA and names his bike(s)...).

And yes, I will watch Beanz' funny/informative videos, and will indulge in cool projects (like BigFred's) or silly projects [that are even cooler ] from people like that guy that hunts triathletes (I forget his name...)--ok, more like "poaches" triathletes, but you get the picture...

I also tend to read anything from the fairer sex, as they are few and far between on these forums, and, well, I have always found what they have to say interesting...
