Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I’ve never really played piano other than a few lessons. I started playing guitar at 10 and played in punk and metal bands in my early twenties, was actually pretty decent. Later on I used to do the one man singing in a bar thing on acoustic thing. I haven’t picked up a guitar in 12 years but I have played my daughter’s viola a bit without butchering the music too poorly.

I have not touched a percussion instrument since 1977. Other than air drums.

We can put up any damn fence we want. Luckily we have very nice neighbors on both sides so no fence necessary.

We decided against the fence mostly because it wrecks the view of the woods behind the house and it’s really not a pain to just go out with the dogs when they need to. They’re both old and it’s not worth putting up a fence so they can run free for a year or two when they really only want to just sit on the deck with us anyway

The steering wheel counts as a percussion instrument, right?

Fence and aesthetic requirements in these parts are not typically determined by an HOA. They are usually in the form of deed restrictions put in place by the original develop to make sure the development is consistent from house to house to a degree. I don't mind the restrictions since everyone knows what they are before they buy, and you can always go elsewhere if you don't like them. The restrictions can be enforced by an HOA as well as any property owner in the development.

So does my wife's head.

Once on a road trip, she was driving and I was playing air drums in the passenger seat. Trying to simulate a cymbal crash, I wacked her in the head. It was harder than intended, and thumped her pretty hard. We both laugh about it, but she never lets me forget.

I have nice neighbors too, but I've really come to value the solitude and privacy I experience in my own little slice of nature, invisible to others behind my fence. BUT the sticker price.

We might be leaving here anyway.

Aha. I believe in my area you either have an HOA and have significant restrictions on what you can/can't do (example, neighbor behind us was commenting on our lovely apple and peach trees, and lamenting she can't have any in her yard because HOA)....or you can do anything you want on your property as long as it does not violate the township code.

In the summer, you can’t see mine. We a 15 foot wide section of mature trees on one side that is common land and on the other side mature tall arbor vitae. It’s really private.

HOA's cannot tell you what you can or cannot do in Texas independent of the deed restrictions. They can only enforce the restrictions that are placed on the land in the development.

I suspect Mrs. F would have a very different reaction.

Speaking of unintentional assault...

I was doing a Zwift ride in the garage last night while my daughter was working on a project that was creating a lot of noise. My wife texted me from inside the house to ask the kid to chill on the noise. She was turned away from me, and was listening to music on headphones. My hollering and arm-waving did not get her attention, so I grabbed the only thing within reach to toss her way - a mostly-full water bottle. My intent was to land it near her, in her field of vision, so get her to look up. My awkward underhand left-hand toss was a bit harder that intended, and off target. The bottle hit her pretty solidly in the upper thigh. She was pretty pissed off at me, slammed her stuff down, and left the garage. It stopped the noise, however. In the distraction, I got spit out the back of the C-bot splinter group I was riding with, and had to put in a big effort to bridge back up.

That's going to read differently in court than you intended. 😅

Thankfully, she recovered quickly and allowed me to throw more stuff in her general direction later that night - about 50 front-toss pitches in our batting cage.

Just found out I got awarded Charlotte as my next crew base. Stoked, didn’t think I would be able to hold that for atleast a year.
