I think the tape looks good but I especially like the yellow "emoji face" wall outlet!

Sometimes "period correct" feels like validation; other times it just feels dated or costumey. For me this would be the latter. Ymmv.

as noted by others, it is entirely period correct. It has certainly fallen out of favor, but who knows if it might be back in favor in a decade or two??

In the meantime... if a solid color tape isn't interesting enough, there is the option to have some fun with cloth tape. There is the "harlequin" method of wrapping two different rolls of tape onto a bar that produces a diamond pattern. It's a bit gaudy, which is why I've done it on a bike that is a solid color.....

On another bike, I just did a short section of this diamond pattern along the top of the bar. The bike had some contrasting panels in the paint, so it is just enough to add some interest, but not too much. I think it works well.

Strictly my opinion and who am I?
The tires and saddle came with the bike and I'm not sure I'm going to keep
the bike so I don't want to put too much $$ into it now

Those hoods are very hard to find. I was lucky enough that someone on here
donated them and wouldn't accept any payment.

In that case I would not worry about the tape, it's time correct and it's new I understood.

Flipping it brings up a different topic. If it was me, I would swap out for something more neutral.

Your bike/your rules. Everybody has their own boat to float. Some like it wild and crazy.

Just in case you want to go all the way with the look, you could sport something like this:

It looks great. Yellow tape would take away from the bike more than the splash tape would, it would be too "loud" the blue quiets the tape down while still giving a splash of color.

Dear OP,

As was said before it is your bike. Why would you care what anyone else thinks of it. If it makes you happy then it must be just fine.

FWIW, I think it's pretty cool

The thing with bar tape is ...ITS TEMPORARY! What you have chosen is not my taste but it ain't my bike and you can change it at any time, unless you like it . If you like it , wear it out and do it all over again. The bike looks great .

I chose two tone because of the fade paint job on my Mondia

Maybe gaudy is nice for a change. I have several conservative looking bikes. Even my 85 Ironman is conservative. Gaudy might be okay if it isn’t irreversible. The further from stock the subject bike is, the more is allowed. Might be your mood that day for that ride is whimsical. Enjoy the ride mostly, and please yourself.

I needed something to "brighten" the look of this 2006 Lightspeed Sienna that I sourced from a thrift store, so I went with a bright marble tape.

Marble, as distinguished from "clown vomit" variants (having more than two colors), lol.

No regrets at all, the bike really would look much, much better photographed outdoors though!

I hoped that the bike's likely-deceased previous owner would approve.

It's just fine but... Maybe something else on the bike with the same pattern?

I think '80s/early '90s bikes REQUIRE obnoxious bar tape:
