The Levi Effect

So, now that we know Levi basically doped his entire career, what the heck is this movie going to be on? Is it going to be focused on the doping, or is it all going to be a lie? My impression this movie is about his career...Is anyone even going to go see this now?

Watching Levi race is like watching paint dry.

I do like his professionalism though. Very meticulous with his diet, training, equipment, etc...

I wish I could remember the funny passing comments on Eurosport here and there when they show him sitting 3rd wheel as usual.

The movie advertisement says it is "honest and un-censored" . I bet that statement will be proven to be incorrect.

FAQ. "Does Levi talk about his doping in this documentary?"
A. Yes. By far the hardest part of telling his true story.

Guess it may be an interesting watch after all...

Levi will be looking for a new team. He got fired from QS and accepted a 6-month suspension. He could be back in time for Amgen ToC.

He can buy a day license and ride unattached. He'd just have to pony up for a day license each day. What are they, like $10?

I would be curious about why, if he quit doping in 2007, he never won much of anything until after 2007? Sounds like doping makes you ride slower. Would also like to know what made him expect to have a contract after his testimony? He seems reasonably intelligent, but now I have to wonder.

I'd think he has a few years of ferrying bottles left in him.

IIRC he was Armstrong's water boy for many years prior to 2007.

I also don't think you can look at a couple of palmares from one rider and, on that basis, declare that "doping doesn't work at all."

The way he tells it, he didn't have a choice. During the federal investigation into Armstrong, the prosecutor granted him immunity; this strips you of the ability not to testify under the 5th Amendment. (Yes, you can be compelled to testify -- you just can't be forced to incriminate yourself, and immunity removes that as a possibility.) So he could either take a gamble that no one would fold, face a potential trial for perjury, say something he thinks the prosecutor wants to hear, or tell the truth.

In the interview this week, he said he expects Armstrong to retaliate against him. (Armstrong allegedly texted Levi's wife "run don't walk" after the word got out about his testimony, which they interpret as a threat.) At one point during the interview the phone was ringing, and he said that it was probably his team calling to fire him.

Even if he was joking, I think he understands that testifying may well end his career as a pro racer. But he felt like he didn't have a choice, and can only hope that someone offers him a contract.

In this case, many means two seasons.
During which time he finished 3rd at the Vualta a Espaņa.
He also crossed the line first at '96 U.S. National Criterium Championships
but since he got popped for doping, he didn't get the jersey or the victory. =\
But he did place 2nd at the 1998 Vualta a Espaņa, and he did that100% drug-free.
How do I know he raced clean in '98? I know becasue he says so. =)

the idea that these guys suddenly went clean and rode just as well is more indicative of their propensity for being lying **** suckers than anything else.

Clearly, Levi is one of those much talked about racers who benefited less from doping than other racers who doped . Ergo, his ability to race and win post-doping at the highest level is completely understandable. Since, you know, not all racers respond to doping the same and some benefited less or more than other dopers. =)

I agree.

Look at other athletes who have been busted for doping and how they performed afterwards...

Marion Jones couldnt make a high school track team after her comeback.

Ben Johnson couldnt qualify for a single professional race.

Look at Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez and every other baseball players linked or proven to be a doper. Not a single one of them performed better after being caught.

If being clean somehow made you faster then I would be in the TDF right now running circles around everyone.

Levi is an idiot to think he would have a contract, or any cycling future, after his testimony. He lied to his employer. Tygart is an idiot for believing that the world revolves around the USADA. Very comical and sad at the same time.

That's not a very comprehensive list. I don't see the direct correlation to consistently winning and doping. The mentioned athletes may in fact be serial liars, but I think the people that win, win due to a willingness to do whatever it takes to win, and most often a willingness to do what others are unwilling to do. Be it doping or simply working harder, the end result would be much the same. I have to think that the doping is as much a psychological advantage as it is a physical advantage.
