Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this a good road bike a good option for 300.00

I am looking for a nice used road bike and came found out about this one for 300.00
It is a Jamis Ventura late 90s I believe.
This is what I have been told about the bike:

Good condition
Wheels Mavic MA3
Shifters break levers Ultegra
rear/ front derailler Tiagra

I will attach a picture of the bike and like I said, this is a steel one from the lat 90s I believe. Now it appears the Jamis Venturas are updated with aluminum frames with carbon forks for 600.00

Hell yeah, nice find. A good steel roadie already updated to new-age shifting. With a set of good tires and pedals, that is one HELL of a FIND.

Granted it is your size. Size is most important.

That saddle angle is a bit strange. How does the owner keep from sliding off the front and racking himself?

That can be adjusted. Is the OP about 6 feet tall?

At $300, I would jump on it. I second the mention of making sure it's your size. No deal is a good one if the bike is a bad fit. Happy riding!

This bike does not come with pedals but I was hoping I could find some decent inexpensive ones. I will upload a picture of the tires.

I have not bought it yet but probably will since some seem positive about it but I am new to biking and wanted to hear what you guys thought before I bought it.
I know it will be more heavy than new bikes (reynolds 520) but some people on here seem to
like old steel bikes.

My lightest bike is a 24 lb. 1987 Schwinn Prelude. I'm guessing this bike will be lighter than that.

I doubt that there is a 1lb difference between the steel bike and the aluminum bike, especially of the 520 is double butted.
BTW, its a 2001 Jamis and it came with brifters (Tiagra).
I went from an aluminum Cannondale to a steel Bianchi for my #2 bike this year and I'm very happy with that change.
If you buy that Jamis you won't regret it.

I appreciate you finding the year of the bike. I found this link showing them:

I have the exact same same bike. It is a very nice ride. It is a bit heavy by today's standard at 26 lbs but it is a nice ride nonetheless.

For $300 it is a good deal.

FWIW, when I was shopping for the bike I rode the Cannondale R400 and I picked the Jamis.

EDIT: I am 5'9" with 32" inseam and I ride a 55cm.

Have often do you ride the Jamis and what distance do you normally ride?

Kind of funny about the Cannondale because I have been torn between the Jamis and an R700 that cost 250 more. The Cannondale is a lot lighter and has higher end componets and is a 2004 but I am trying to make a quick decision because nice bikes seem to sale fast.

i honestly would take the deal. You can buy upgrades later if you care about the weight, but for the components on that bike, 300 dollars is a steel (no pun intended).

I ride a steel that weighs 25 pounds, and i am 6'2 and need a 59-60 cm.... so you should probably be okay.

I have own the bike for 9 years and I have put a few miles on it. I do at least one century with it each year. Tiagra is very reliable.

One good thing about this bike is that it has eyelets for racks, fenders, etc. I just can't bring myself to sell it even after I got my Merlin this year. I kept thinking about converting it into a touring bike...

Congratulations! You will enjoy it. Hope you level the saddle at least.

The good so far:
It rides smooth and I like the way it shifts gears.
It had a recent tune up and he has a couple of additional tires so I feel good about the bike.

He let me use some pedals to test it out but I need:
Pedals, shoes, gloves, pump and a helmet.
Any suggestions from anyone?
