"Cycle Sport America" has a recent issue listing the equipment used by each major team. Campy's share of that market has dropped dramatically in the past five years, probably due to Shimano offering subtantial "incentives" to the teams to switch to Shimano.

Just by looks, it seems to be almost 50/50 with some other component companies here and there like FSA, Truvativ, Sram, and Cannondale.

go to the cyclingnews.com teams database. Lists bike and component sponsors for all teams.

Knock yourself out.

Bikes: Cannondale CAAD8/Record 10s, Felt DA700 Chorus 10s,

I can't remember exact numbers from the article in CycleSport but it's about 60% Campy (brifters/front/rear/derailures). Many of the teams use different cranks and some are using different brakes. Campy still is the majority but that has really come down in the last 10 years.

The thing that amazes me is that after all the time Shimamo has been in the pro peleton it took untill 1999 for them to win a TdF!

What an amazing coincidence....

Do you think if Gianni Bugno was using Campagnolo he could have beaten Indurain?

No and that wasn't my point. It just amazes me that after nearly 3 decades in the peleton it took that long for a Shimano equipped bike to win the TdF. The odds would seem to be in their favor long before that.

Hey I love Shimano, as guy who's own's two Campy 10s bikes I think DA actually shifts a bit better than Record (I've had the chance to ride DA for an extensive length of time). However the two things that I don't like are the hoods (they don't fit my hands very well) and the cable routing which I find to be quite ugly. The hoods issue is the real reason I put '04 Record and Chorus on my two LOOK's. Other than that I think DA is just fine.

So it's reall just a coincidence that no Shimano sponsored teams could field a winner until 1999.

If what you are trying to say is that Shimano didn't have a competitive team in peleton untill 99 that's not what I mean. Or that Shimano wasn't good enough to win a Tour untill 99 also not what I mean. All I'm saying is that it is surpising that it took so long. Shimano drove the inovations in drive train from the mid-80's on. STI has revolutionized road bike drive trains and we have Shimano to thank for that revolution.

But now I'm not sure.....I've got a headache from thinking about all those Tour de France also-rans struggling on Dura-Ace for so long.

Nah....Delgado won on a carbon TVT frame in 1988, painted to look like a steel Pinarello. Even had the little Columbus stickers on it.

LeMond and Indurain also won Tours on these frames.

Dude do you just not get it? I'm not saying the TdF winners won because they were riding Campy equipped bikes. I'm just surprised that with all the talent riding Shimano that one of their teams had not won it sooner. Not dish on Shimano...but if I've hit a sore spot......
