will be interesting if he continues and fights to win. I was rooting for Menchov but have to switch 180 and root for Roberto because of the accident. Also, OLN doesn't care about cycling...

Daggone. I hope he's able to continue. He's a class act in my book.

The velonews article about the crash says he was getting staples put in the skin on his knee WHILE RIDING. I've seen riders hanging onto the doctor's car in the tour de france for minor attention, but bloody surgery at 40km/h?!
Also, I want to know what sort of staple-gun they use for that... Do you keep a prepared set of sterilized roofing staples?

Sideline staples are quite common in contact sports like rugby and Aussie Rules, especialy in areas that bleed profusely, like the head.
It uses a sterile plastic gun, and plastic staples that feed into it on a little strip. Not really painful at all, considering the injury it's likely to be treating.
The biggest issue with this treatment is how it portrays the sport to the public and any negative images on TV the governing body may not be happy with. To this end, the Australian Rugby League and AFL have mandated that this treatment be done down in the rooms, no longer on the sideline.
