I wouldn't really do that given a car with an engine and gas tank etc. polluting the water pretty bad especially a small lake. Your children might look like martians. But a car body? Probably at least sort of OK.

I think your post was meant as a reply to the person who suggested using the car as a dock. Mine that you quoted was just about filling up the car to use it as an aquarium.

When I was broke I lived in a parked car for a while.

Did you also drive it for transportation, or 'live car free' in the vehicular sense of the term?

A tenant of ours left his Toyota pickup truck on our property a few years ago, and we still have it. There is no engine in it, so I don't think we can sell it. This is in rural New York State.

Be sure to keep the paint finish new-looking; i.e. wash and wax it regularly. A vehicle works like a scarecrow; people see it and assume there are other people around and may thus be more likely to avoid doing things that could get them in trouble.

At that time I was car free. Always worried about the bike locked to the door handle, but never ran into trouble with it. Showered at the local school gymnasium before work. Those days built fortitude and character, and would not trade them for a warm room now. Survived the winter and vowed to have a room somewhere before the next winter!

Dressing up your neighborhood with junked cars is a great way to meet your neighbors and local government officials too!

At a minimum recyclers will haul it away for free if not pay you cash.

Thanks. That's what we're thinking of. We'll tell our friend to haul it away by X date, and if he doesn't, we'll call one of those haulers/scrappers.

Wow, I'm surprised that didn't stir up more hostility. I thought living car free is a lifestyle choice that transcends income or education levels. There's no way I'll ever get to car free, but it is fun at least living reduced car dependent sometimes. And when I do, it's by choice.

Get your friend to sign the title/registration over to you if he can't/won't remove it, otherwise the hauler/scrapper may not take it at your say-so that it is abandoned.

The alternative is to get the local officials to declare it abandoned and maybe they will take care of getting it legally removed.

Probably no hostility because the point of the post is true. If someone wants to get rid of an "old parked car" as a result of lifestyle choice, wonderful, but LCF posters shouldn't count on any tax benefit from such an action.

If a poster on this list wishes to make a charitable donation of an "old parked car" (presumably a junker/beater low value vehicle) and can find a charitable organization that wants it, wonderful.

It is unlikely that anyone on this list, LCF or otherwise, will find much if any tax benefit for such a charitable donation, and are probably fooling themselves if he/she thinks otherwise.

My last car was a "hippie van" and the stereo in there was so much better than the stereo in my house that I would just hang out in there a couple hours after work on occasion. I had a TV in there as well. So my vote goes to "man cave" substitute. The van was set up like a camper, so it was quite comfortable.

My wife keeps a car here in the city. I don't want one and don't need it. She parks it on the street. Free parking lasts two days, maximum, and then you have to move it for street cleaning, or you get a ticket or maybe even towed. So she moves it every day or two. The cleaning period is 1-1/2 hours, so parking spaces become rare for that period. Sometimes if she has nowhere to go, she sits in the car for the period to avoid getting a ticket.

She's traveling this weekend, so she left the car with me. The parking spot went bad at 11am, so I got in the car and looked for a spot. I didn't find one until 12:05, and it was 6/10 mile from home. I jumped on a Citi Bike which was right there.

If you ever paint a bike frame (I don't recommend this) then it's a good idea to leave it in a car, in the sun, with the windows closed, for a couple weeks, to bake on the finish.
