velosteel
i built a surly steamroller with a shimano coaster which works just fine but i can't live with the brake shoes rattling on every little crack in the street. sounds like junk. i took it apart and packed the crap out of it which worked for a week until the brake shoes made their space back again (as well as grease oozing out the dustcap) bike should be dead silent stealth. sometimes you gotta sneak up on people, right? anyway, does the velosteel rattle? if not, i gotta have one.

Bikes: surly steamroller w/coaster brake, electra single speed cruiser, specialized rockhopper commuter, no-name single speed folder, 700c ultimate wheel, 24" unicycle, specialized bmx lsd, single seat single speed huffy tandem, pink upsidedown parade bike
My steamroller with shimano coaster hub does exactly the same thing. I thought it was just me.
I've got 5 other coaster bikes, and none of them rattle, but they're all on lower PSI tires.

Are you sure it's the brake shoes rattling? I've never heard such a thing on any coaster brake, and it seems difficult to conceive of a scenario where the brake shoes could actually rattle. I did come across a ******er spring that clicked once.

i really think it's the shoes. with a 700 wheel @ 80psi there's no shock absorbing. an old fat tire schwinn absorbs the road. i previously had a newer sturmey archer coaster that rattled also so i laced up the shimano, same problem. it was silent after i packed it with grease, but the rattle came back in a couple days.

Greetings,
I have a Velosteel hub on my Steamroller with nary a rattle. I run Kenda Kwest tires, 700x35, at 75 psi.
When I ordered the Velosteels, I sent an email to the email listed on their website and began a correspondence with their marketing guy. No problem.
Now, however, there is a place in the UK that stocks the hubs, in several variations. If I were to do it again, I'd probably just look them up and buy one.

i know i look shady dropping out of this post for months but i'm still here.
unfortunately i'm not coming here with great news. the last 2 or 3 emails i sent to velosteel went unreturned. i will try and get a hold of them soon once finals are over. i would still love to do the group buy as i have two bikes that i was planning on using this hub with.

maybe you should contact muttley, since he seemed to have luck contacting the velosteel people and buying a case. see thread below for more info:

I'd like to know how well these are holding up. Kids doing powerslides with coaster braked Sting-Rays isn't the same as adults weighing three times as much.

Is there a Velosteel order still open? I am a newbie lurker, but I have been rebuilding all brands of coaster brakes and building road (coastie?) wheels for a few years.
Alaskan winters can cause bad problems for brake and derailleur cables, so my builds have been a popular solution with my bike wierdo friends. Most of the frames I have used are old road bikes with horizontal dropouts, so I usually end up putting lots of washers on the axles.
The clutching mechanisms are the issue in most of the hubs I have rebuilt, and I have put new projects on hold until I can get something more durable.

Bringing up an old thread but I am now, 6+ years later... Finally building up my coaster brake from this group buy for an all original 1980's Vitus.

Finally
Glad to hear it. You may well want to strip out the old grease and repack... Probably a good idea when new, and even better now.
