Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My 2005 Trek Madone SL 5.2 (Pictures)

After a three-month wait, I got my bike in June. Thus far I have a little over 800 miles on it, and it's a solid ride. I like the 2005 Platinum Silver/Black Pearl Carbon color scheme--it's not as "loud" as some of the earlier Treks. The Madone seems to be a good climber, which is helpful for East Tennessee riding.

Welcome fellow MGC member. Let me be the first to say...flip it. J/K

Nice looking bike...if the bars are where they fit don't touch 'em. Looks like a sweet bike.

Velo Vel, I just bought myself a Madone SL 5.2 too. Why did you go with the new wheels over the Race Lites? Do they weigh less? The ride of the Madone is very nice. I just don't feel as beat up after a long ride with this bike. I'm going to replace the bar tape with some thicker gel bar tape though since the stock tape is too thin for me (numbness left hand that comes and goes).

RD, according to my buddy who just acquired a Madone SL 5.9, it's 16.5 pounds with pedals and a fizik arione saddle.

Thanks - though I am specifically wondering about the difference between the 5.2 and the 5.2 SL

The frame is a different frame. There is no shark fin on the seat tube and no hump back on the down tube. Less aerodynamic but lighter.

I knew about all that stuff, but I haven't been able to find out the difference in weight between the two.

I don't recall the exact difference between the 5.2 and SL 5.2, but 100 grams sounds about right. It's not very much.

As for the wheels, these are 1500 grams, so they are 300(?) grams lighter than the Race Lites. But they are noticeably smoother going over bumps.

Not sure about the stem; it's the original setup from when I got the bike.

sweet - in that case, I see no reason not to get the regular 5.2 in that it looks much sexier. I definately have my eye on it as a potential next bike..

velo,

nice ride--love the wheels (thanks for commenting on my LTA hubs thread, btw). It's nice to see a carbon trek that looks modern, yet not "flashy" (no sharkfin/whale hump frame, no "paired spoke technology" wheels)--I think the other treks look fine, but a more traditional frame shape and higher count spoke wheels will hold their value better. just imo

congrats on a classy bike

BTW how tall are you?
You may want to shorten your STI shifter cables. They are way too long? Looks like they did not bother cutting to length. It will be lighter (weight weenies will be happier) and the cables will have a better path. Are you sure the bike is 18 lbs (with a full water bottle?)?

Bikes: Too many.

Yea 18 lbs seems a little steep if you ask me. The 5.2 frame is the same as the 5.9 frame. Just different groupo, and fork. And also the 5.9 SL comes STOCK at 15lbs so your friend must not have weighed his correctly.
