Grand Tour Highland

So I've been called a wussy for even considering the lowland double. Am I? I'm not what I consider a double veteran, as I've only done two (1 this year, and 1 8 years ago). So who's doing the highland? Anyone even considering the triple?

Yea, I'm insane. Currently waiting for the men in the little white coats to take me away, haha ....

+1 on the highland if I ride GT this year. No desire to even consider a triple. I've got a friend who has done the triple twice and he's super fast on doubles. Even he admits that it's insane.

I did the Highland in 2005, the climbing wasn't that bad. The climb to the lunch stop was the worst part for me. There's more climbing than advertised, IIRC the route sheet shows ~8000', and it's actually more like 10,000'. I kept watching my altimeter, thinking the climbing was over

Ok, I'll do it, so that Lynn won't call me a wussy!

I did the Lowland the for my first Grand Tour (2003), but I've ridden the Highland every year since. The Highland is a much more beautiful ride, and only Potrero is steep (19% at its worst). Otherwise, it's all good!

Which Lynn is calling you a wuss? Lynn Katano, maybe?

Now ME., I didn’t say the Highland Triple was insane. I said was insane for doing it, I don’t know why I’m doing it again this year. Ding Dong, oh there are some guys with white coats at my front door.

Of course ... pocket rocket! We go back awhile. She says "don't even think about doing the lowland"

You're funny. And yes, you're my OTHER friend who rides the triple (I was referring to Francis). But you are a little nutty to do it. I'll cheer you on and buy you some pancakes afterwards.

Yea, but if I get done around 2AM and you pick me up, how long does it take to get there , we could eat pancakes by the raising sun. Ah but alas my wife has promised me breakfast , I'll just have to take a rain check, maybe next time.

Great! In fact, more people do the highland route than the lowland route.

I'm beginning to see that now. I thought it would be the other way around.

Waaaaay cool.

The big thing I don't like about the lowland is a couple of the roads they use are high traffic roads, it's about the only way around that area (no fault of the LA Wheelmen, they do and outstanding job putting the ride on). The roads are narrow and no shoulder.

Yea, I hear ya. Maybe I'll see you there for 10 seconds, as you streak past me. I'm the guy where the bike doesn't match the speed ... haha

Hi Spingineer,

Good to hear you've known Lynn Katano for awhile! And she is super "High-Energy" for sure.
So if you know Lynn, have you ridden with ADO?

Usually, there's a large contingent of ADO riders departing at exactly 4:30 AM (Count down per Dave Evan's watch).

I know you said you didn't want to ride in the dark, but at that time of morning there are very few cars/trucks on PCH.

Plus the 4:30AM start gives you a good jump on the day, and makes finishing in the daylight (when there is lots of traffic on PCH) all that much easier.

Best Regs,
Rick / OCRR

I agree, Rick. I was also struck with how peaceful and beautiful it was last year starting earlier (I wanted to start at 4:30 but my friend was running late, so we started later but still in the dark (the sun was just barely coming up). I've never been on PCH when there was almost NO cars with the waves crashing. Definitely worth doing.
